Each December, gamers around the nation gather together to have their arguments about which game is better settled on national television. For those who are unfamiliar with the Spike Video Game Awards, the VGAs were started in 2004 to honor great games, technological advances, and other achievements in the gaming world. Though some argue that it is merely a popularity contest, recognition at the VGAs has proven to have a significant impact. Games honored at the awards usually show a spike in sales, and, in recent years, games awarded Game of the Year have been re-released in a Game of the Year Edition. Last year’s winner, the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition included the downloadable content expansions The Shivering Isles and The Knights of the Nine.
On top of showcasing the games we all know and love, the VGAs usually put on a pretty good show too. A couple big name bands usually play, and the hosts are good. Last year, Samuel L. Jackson was the host, and this year, we shall be graced by the presence of Jack Black.
Another bonus for us gamers is that many studios have started using the VGAs as an opportunity to launch world premiers for upcoming games. So basically, you should probably watch the show. Here is a list of the games nominated for Game of the Year and some of the games that will be premiering. For a full list of categories, games nominated and premiers, click here. The 2008 Spike Video Game Awards will air on SpikeTV on December 14th at 9:00 pm Eastern time.

I am going to try and get out there to see this! I am super excited that Jack Black is hosting…I liked last year, but Samuel Jackson was SUPER dirty! I think they over-did it a bit. Their were WAY to many masturbation jokes…haha

Awesome, Jack Black!
Eeee Watchmen game.

I dunno, how do you expand the Watchmen story? Unless they’re using the game as an opportunity to put in stuff that they cut from the movie.

If you go by Hype. GTAIV should easily win, but if you go by the most entertaining game. Hmm, that’s hard. It’s probably between Fallout3, LBP & Gears2. What do you guys think?
