And then there were seven … soon to be three.

Go, TDK, go! I can’t wait for the Oscars—I try to watch them every year (Feb. 22 is the date, mark it down). And we all know that The Dark Knight is extremely worthy of taking home some pretty little golden men, in numerous categories. The musical score is brilliant, and so were all the actors—particularly Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart. Not to mention the great costumes and make-up, and Chris Nolan’s innovative and smart directing. And the adapted screenplay! And Best Picture!
Okay, okay, while I may be more than a little biased here—there are certainly other very worthy 2008 films (I hear Milk is supposed to be fantastic)—there’s no denying the awesome, heart-pounding, deeply moving power of The Dark Knight. But will the Academy of Motion Pictures be rational for once and recognize TDK for its excellence—or will they let the fact that it’s a member of the comic book movie genre get in the way?

Well, keep your fingers crossed. Our first chance at judging how the Academy feels starts Thursday, January 15th, when they’ll narrow down the list of nominees for Best Achievement in Visual Effects from the final seven to the ultimate three:
Australia
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Members of the Visual Effects Branch will watch fifteen-minute clips from all seven films, and following the screenings each member will nominate three for Oscar consideration.
The 81st Annual Academy Awards nominations will be announced Thursday, January 22, at 5:30 am PT in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Discuss: Which movies would you nominate—and what one should win? It’s a good sign that more than one of them is a comic book movie, but from what I’ve heard of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I’m worried the Academy will predictably snatch a “normal” drama movie over anything else.

That is a tough one. Hellboy was freaking amazing in terms of the visuals, and might top TDK and Iron Man. I will be happy if any of them win though!

Whoa, really? I haven’t seen the second Hellboy yet, unfortunately.
I’m going to have to watch it!
But yeah, while I’m obviously waving the flag for The Dark Knight, as a comic book fan and advocate, it would be fantastic if any of them won.

The top 3 will likely be, Iron Man, Mummy, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. And likely Buttons will win. This has very little to do with the movie, action or drama or anything but the difficulty of the effects. (why transformers lost, robots are damn easy to do vs animal) Iron man will have the same difficulty since a guy in a robot suit is pretty easy to create vs abdominal snowmen or an old guy on a kids body.
HellBoy was good but a lot of it was done practically. and the final scene was just ok.
Journey is a joke of a nomination, Narnia, Hulk and Cloverfield I all think deserved it more then Journey to the green screen.
oh and this is coming form inside info, since i work in this industry, and I’m hearing from the people who will be at the Bake off voting for the final 3.

What about TDK and Australia? You didn’t mention them.

Didn’t see Australia (and no one else it seems liek) so i have no idea what it got nominated for.
TDK didn’t have any stand out effects, nothing ground breaking, nothing new or interesting. i know there were some in there, but nothing worth an Academy award for.

Both TDK and Australia are in the remaining seven for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
Really?! Can’t say I share your opinion.
