“Has Boobs, Reads Comics.” That’s the title of my blog at TheNerdyBird.com. It pretty much sums me up but this is where I’m supposed to fill you in on all the details right? Are you ready? Here it goes…
Fate must have had a hand in my life. I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy (specifically Spinal Muscular Atrophy, SMA) when I was two and a half. This led to my family’s relationship with the Muscular Dystrophy Association which is on-going to this day. When I was 7 I was chosen to be the New Jersey State Goodwill Ambassador for MDA. I got the chance to travel all over the state to various fundraising events meeting all sorts of great people. They liked me so much, I was chosen to serve for another year. You may notice in many of my pictures I am standing. I’m fortunate enough to still be able to walk but I use a motorized scooter to get around most places. If you see me at a con I’ll most likely be a blur racing past you.
My first year on the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, which raises millions of dollars every year to find a cure for those with MD, was also when I was 7. I opened the show in the New York area at WWORTV that year and I have been appearing or co-hosting in NY every year since.
It was my stint as an “MDA News Anchor” on the Telethon for a few years that made me decide what I wanted to do with my life. I went to school for TV and Journalism and landed a job as a DJ at the radio station 94.3 The Point right out of college. My now-boss’ parents spotted me on the Telethon and told him all about me, he invited me to co-host the stations morning show for a few days and by the next month I was working there. You can catch me on-air Monday - Thursday, 10pm-2am and Saturday’s, 8pm-2am. I also do voice overs, act and anything else on-camera when I can because that’s where my real passion lies.
I started TheNerdyBird.com so I could “blog about all things nerdy” I loved. My life as a huge geek probably started for me when I dressed as Supergirl for Halloween in Kindergarten. The rest is history. I’m a huge sci-fi fan (my all-time favorite movie is The Fifth Element, Muuuuultipassss!), I’m a casual video game player (my DS is my buddy) and I love comic books (obviously). I actually only started reading them a few years ago but I’m a life-long fan of many of the characters due to movies and tv. Batman, Green Arrow, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Zatanna are just some of my favorites.
I also recently started dressing up in costume to go to conventions which is so much fun. I dressed as Zatanna for the last NYCC and the year before that I was Poison Ivy. And yes, my hair is naturally that red! People tell me all the time that they’d kill to have my color. I make them mad by dying it black. I’m planning to finally make the trip out to California for the next SDCC. I can’t wait! I’m sure I’ll get completely lost and miss everything I wanted to see but I’m up for it anyway.
The most exciting thing to happen to me recently was that blogging, comics and costuming got me a spot in an article in Elle Magazine. I can’t begin to tell you how thrilling that was. Being in Elle is one thing, getting there for being a complete geek? You can’t beat that.
