Comic Book Review: Berserker #0

Yeah, decapitation is totally in.

Berserker #0
Writer: Rick Loverd
Artist: Jeremy Haun
Covers: Dale Keown

Summary: Jump on board the new comic series produced by “Heroes” star Milo Ventimiglia and his DiVide Pictures partner, Russ Cundiff. Created by screenwriter Rick Loverd, Berserker combines elements of superheroes with Norse mythology and weaves in the very human themes of self-worth, courage and determination. Throw in some bone-crushing violence and punch-in-the-mouth action and you’ve got a recipe for a great Top Cow book!

That’s just the beginning! Also in this issue is an exciting glimpse at a diverse mix of other projects coming from Top Cow in 2009. You don’t want to miss it!

Review: Actor Milo Ventimiglia (best known now for his role on Heroes) recently helped bring a fresh new story concept to Top Cow’s attention. Introducing Berserker, a comic that runs wild with the idea of Norse shape-shifters known as Berserkers—a name that translates to “he who wears the skin of the bears.”

The preview book gives us a sneak peak into what could be an intriguing 2009 comic. Rick Loverd originally wrote Berserker to present as a TV pilot, though how this bloody good tale would have ended up on a network beats me. I mean, just look at the cover! Anyway, there’s no complaining here—due to the slow pace of the writer’s strike last year, the pilot snagged a different sort of attention that landed it in the comic book industry.

Which is great news, considering Berserker has the makings of a violent treat. Jeremy Haun does a delightful job at transforming the comic into a visually pleasing gore fest that heightens the emotional ride the protagonist finds himself experiencing … again. When Farris Jorn undergoes hypnosis to reach the root of his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), he relives a war memory in which just another brutal day as a soldier in Afghanistan takes an unexpected twist. Not only do he and his partner Clint become POWs, but their way out of the situation isn’t exactly by any normal means. Judging by the comic’s title (and cover), I’m sure you can guess at what I mean.

Berserker #0 invites you to step into a potentially compelling storyline, and I’m happy to accept. Who knows, I might just go berserk upon its arrival.

I am more intrigued by the shape shifting element than the violence itself. I think I will give the series a go!

The cover art is very well-drawn, but not necessarily interesting enough to make me pick it up. That’s kind of a strange phenomenon.
