Broken Trinity: The Darkness #1 CoverSummary: “Depowered and alone, Jackie Estacado latches on to the only two people in the world he still cares about: Sara Pezzini and her baby, Hope. So when the man he’s hired to watch over them is discovered and chased away by Sara, Jackie makes his way back to New York City. But he quickly realizes the journey home is littered with obstacles, and he’s in no mood for delays.

This is the first of three tie-in issues to Broken Trinity, featuring the art of Jorge Lucas (Pilot Season: Ripclaw) and the first of three alternate covers by Jeffrey Spokes (Sadhu: The Silent Ones). Subsequent tie-in issues will feature Witchblade and The Angelus.”

Review: Awhile ago I interviewed comics writer Ron Marz about the new Top Cow mini-series, Broken Trinity (catch up on that here if you missed it); it sounded great. For the first main issue, it really drew me in, and the preview book I picked up on Free Comic Book Day helped out a lot in bringing me into the Witchblade/Darkness/Angelus world.

After reading this issue—The Darkness tie-in to BT—I’m even more impressed, to say the least.

Previously, Top Cow sent me the latest main issue of The Darkness (volume 3 #4), but even though it really hooked me and got me extremely interested in the title itself (wow!), I unfortunately wasn’t able to find the time to review it. Even though I’m not familiar with The Darkness, I didn’t feel lost; the art was spectacular.

Here we have a different writer (Ron Marz) and artist, and I’m happy to say reading this tie-in had a very similar impact on me.

At first I wasn’t too impressed with the art—after seeing main character Jackie Estacado (as well as the entire comic) gorgeously drawn by Michael Broussard, I missed his pencils. But I quickly warmed up to Jorge Lucas’s art with this different visual version of Estacado as well as the environment and other characters. It might be dramatically different from Broussard’s work, but Jorge Lucas presents some utterly fantastic stuff here, too. And the colors (by Lee Loughridge) are brilliant, as well.

Likewise, Ron Marz’s writing completely blew me away. Like with The Darkness #4, I didn’t feel lost (and there’s a very nice summary of events before the comic, which is ALWAYS helpful). The dialogue is absolutely great, making the comic feel lush and longer than it is: definitely meaning it’s worth your money and doesn’t skimp you on the goods. The overall storyline is well-done and delicately crafted, making the comic intriguing and irresistible. If this is any indication to how Broken Trinity will play out, then count me in. This is going to be good.

Five stars from me, hands-down.

You can check out a preview of the comic here—or buy it yourself (it’s already in stores)! :)
