Comic Book Review: Broken Trinity Witchblade #1

Bottom line: If you are looking for thrills attune to those of Broken Trinity, you won’t find them here. However, you will get a peek into how the pawns of the recent events are making due.

Review: After everything that Sara has been through in the events of Broken Trinity, she needs some time off to get her head straight. That is exactly what happens in Broken Trinity Witchblade #1. The comic starts off in a NSFW dream involving Sara and Jackie. The past has proven that the two don’t work well together, and for that reason I felt better when Sara woke up in bed with the ever-patient Patrick Gleason. The scene switches to Sara and Daniel the next day, walking in the park to view the marker they picked out for Celestine – the previous bearer of the Angelus who was killed in the Broken Trinity events. Somehow Sara finds the compassion to mourn for her, even though in the past Celestine attempted to beat her to death with a chain in the middle of her pregnancy. Then Sara and Daniel talk about the current state of things - Jackie being cut off from the Darkness and the Angelus drifting without a host.

The two bearers part, giving way for a secret rendezvous with Jackie, as he wants to see his daughter Hope again. Sara tries to corner Jackie about where he had been the past months, and he dodges her questions for the most part by saying he was simply “down south.” The conversation shifts to why he returned, and he admits that he had some business to take care of (referring to the goons he took out in a previous issue after they carelessly killed a young girl in a kidnapping wrong). After admitting that he killed the thugs, Sara questions his role as a father for one moment, and then is kissing him the next. Needless to say, Sara’s life is as complicated as ever – this time the supernatural is taking a backseat to the web that relationships weave.

Without spoiling the remainder of the issue, Jackie also realizes his life has been changed, and not just because of the Darkness abandoning him. Now that he has a daughter, he realizes just how far he would go to protect her.

Broken Trinity Witchblade #1 is undoubtedly slower than the last issues I have read, but it feels appropriate as Broken Trinity left quite a few lose ends. So if you are looking for thrills attune to those of Broken Trinity, you won’t find them here. However, you will get a peek into how the pawns of the recent events are making due in their temporarily peaceful lives.

Broken Trinity Witchblade #1 is on shelves now, go and check it out for yourself!
