Cyblade #2
Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Artist: Rick Mays and Lee Ferguson Afua Richardson
Cover: Rick Mays

Summary: It’s “episode 2″ of this Pilot Season 2007 winner!

In the time before she became a member of Cyberforce, Dominique, a.k.a. Cyblade, is still on the hunt for her former trainer, Stephen Rashell, who has been revealed to be a double agent! With her new mentor at Cyberdata determined to turn Dominique into the killer she’s destined to become, the superpowered teenager must make a hard decision from which there is no turning back.

Rick Mays (LIVEWIRES) and Lee Ferguson (SUPERGIRL) collaborate on art, while Afua Richardson (PILOT SEASON: GENIUS) contributes a flashback sequence!

Review: Ahh, scantily clad women and crotch shots. What better way to start a comic? ;) There might be even less clothing on the two super-powered ladies gracing the cover of the second issue of CYBLADE, but there’s definitely more to this comic than initially met the eye.

Last time I expressed my not too fond feelings over the first issue of CYBLADE, but I enjoyed the concept enough that I hoped things would improve the next time around. Well, good news. They did.

The issue itself flies by, but only because it just sucks you into the story. One of my complaints from before was how little the main character Dominique—otherwise known as Cyblade—was actually used. Thankfully, we get to see a lot more (not so literally—okay, I’m done with the naked jokes) of her this time, which is fun because as a character, I think she has a lot of potential that I’m excited to see blossom.

CYBLADE #2 focuses on “Dom” and her new handler, Jocelyn—who also happens to be the woman who trained her and caused her a pretty hefty amount of grief. Their mission is to find and kill Steven Rashell, Dom’s old handler and the man who freed her from the enslavement of the Brain Box, which programmed her for her job as an assassin. But can Dominique finally beat Jocelyn and break free of Cyberdata’s control, or will she be erased—or worse? Looks like we’re just going to find out; this issue ends on a cliffhanger.

Meanwhile, we get some comic relief from Steven’s interaction with a rogue Cyberdata engineer.

So what’s the bottom line? CYBLADE might not catching flames just yet, but I’m definitely warmed up to what I’ve seen so far.

I haven’t had a chance to read it just yet, but am excited too! Agreed on the first issue, there wasn’t much to attach to when it came to Dominique at first. Glad she gets a little more substance to her in this one!
