Comic Book Review: Gigantic #4

Magma-covered robots, green alien afros, and second chances with a hidden catches. Definitely science-fiction.

Gigantic #4
Publisher: Dark Horse
Writer: Rick Remender
Penciller: Eric Nguyen
Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Summary: To end The United Broadcast Company’s malevolent control over Earth, Gigantic must steal a UFO and battle his way to the UBC’s heavily fortified base station on the dark side of the universe. Only one thing stands between Gigantic and his mission to free us all — the entire United States army! Fan-favorite creators Rick Remender (Fear Agent, The End League) and Eric Nguyen (X-Men, Strange Girl) continue their modern twist on classic 1950s sci-fi kitsch!

Review: Gigantic (aka Kane) may have won the mechanical brawl against Iconoclast and successfully disabled the electromagnetic field before it could be destroyed, but Earth’s problems are far from over. The CTC still plans on ending the planet Earth series (and no, not the one with pretty remote locations and fascinating animal life), but Gigantic has vowed to free Earth from the clutches of the Universal Broadcast Network. However, by preventing Earth from exploding with the termination of the electromagnetic field, Gigantic created another problem that needs addressing … and then he stumbled upon a few more.

Earth lingers in an unstable state with the field offline, and the military aren’t too fond of the giant space robot and the cloud of UFOs that recently descended on their planet. This time the action steps up a notch with alien transformations intended to stop Gigantic in his tracks, and the governmental attacks aren’t helping our robot friend from not reaching critical mass and causing countless fatalities in the process. Just when things couldn’t get any worse, the USB homeworld reveals a secret that changes everything you thought you knew about Kane.

The next issue concludes the first arc Remender and Nguyen’s new title, and things are looking good. Gigantic #4 not only puts the fate of one unsuspecting character in serious jeopardy, but the end twist opens the door to some interesting possibilities. Remender made a good move uncovering the cliffhanger now—one issue before the end of the initial run—and the decision brings the anticipation up a notch. I’m excited to see where Remender takes the comic from here; hopefully the next installment will put some factors to rest while welcoming in a whole new host of challenges for Kane, his brother, and the inhabitants of Earth. Until then, watch out for exploding robots, and if you haven’t, give Gigantic a shot.
