Review: Bendis is able to provide the kind of dialog that makes readers feel like they are indulging in a tell-all biography of characters whose lives should be headlining Perez-Hilton and TMZ. His best moments are often the comic relief in characters like Spider-Man and Daimon Hellstrom. Surprisingly, Bendis also applies unexpected humor to Dr. Strange and Captain America. I would be remiss in not providing a Favorite Quote of the Issue:

Captain America: “Stop calling me Bucky Cap!”

Much to the relief of the comic book fans, Wolverine takes more of a back seat in this issue and this week’s X-Force. Marvel is quite possibly listening to our cries. Yes, we love Wolvie, but we don’t need 35 Wolverine-centric books per month. This is the New Avengers and he’s not always front and center seeking attention with funny retorts or the best action sequences. And action is definitely a strong element to this issue donating over one page to Spider Woman versus Madame Masque and about half of the book showing Daimon versus the Hood’s demon Dormammu.

There are times when even I have to remind myself that this is a comic book and disbelief is not only suspended, it has no part in this medium whatsoever.

You hear rapid gunfire. Do you…
a.) run for cover;
b.) call for help;
c.) grab your camera and begin taking pictures from your apartment balcony with your son cheering on Spider-Man?

If you picked “c” then you’d be just like the paunchy dad witnessing Madame Masque’s assault on the Avenger’s jet.

One of the best reasons to jump into this series is for examples of fine of coloring. Justin Ponsor uses a truly blazing palette in the fiery scenes between demonic entities and weaponry explosions. Then he applies an overall sensation of battleship grey to the darkened city.

As for the story, the new Sorcerer Supreme is revealed! So be sure to get your hands on issue #53.

    What Marvel comic doesn’t “shape the future of the Marvel Universe for years to come”? Seriously, I want to know.

    You should add “pee your pants” as an option.
