Summary: Oh man, it is not a good day for the New Avengers. Someone has invented a power disrupter and unleashed it in New York City. The heroes have fallen. Some are hurt bad, others near death. Who will rise to the challenge and save the day? A very important DARK REIGN issue. Something big happens. Not going to tell you what it is but it happens on page 17, panel 4.
Review: Sometimes the fantasy of super powers can turn off potential readers to the idea of comic books as a entertaining media. Usually existing fans will take the opportunity to recount the awesome stories of Batman who is not super powered but a regular man that has trained himself to be the peak of human perfection in not only physical abilities but also mental abilities. In the Marvel Universe such as character finally gets long overdue showcasing in New Avengers #56 and not only is the character a regular human being but also a woman.
Mockingbird is the last Avenger standing in a surprising battle against only one villain. The problem was that said villain was given a device by Dr. Harrows which can suppress super powers in a selective capacity so that individuals can be targeted in an area while leaving others fully functional. Mockingbird has a spectacular action sequence when other villains from the Wrecking Crew show up. She fails in bringing Bucky Cap to his feet so instead she takes his gun and the legendary Captain America shield and she wields both with great skill. This is by no means a Mockingbird issue. She knows when it’s time to retreat in order to stay alive. Plus there are two other important scenes within this issue that are examples of why the New Avengers is a top choice month after month.
Norman Osborn and his crew of Dark Avengers land at the scene. Dr. Harrows begins his negotiations with Osborn and surprises the Iron Patriot by breaching the suit’s security and taking over control of the armor. Osborn maintains his usual arrogance and still will not back down.
In another part of the world, Loki is leading Parker Robbins to the Asgardian stones of Norn which should help him with his Dormammu possession problem. Loki’s female form has become a fan favorite. She’s a seductress far superior to playing simple games of sexuality. Just by reading her dialog, one can hear a smokiness to her voice as she promises to make dreams come true for a small price. The black ink of her shadows alone prove that when a team of artists is matched with the proper writer, magic happens.
