Robot 13 #1
Publisher: Blacklist Studios
Writer: Thomas Hall
Artist: Daniel Bradford

Summary: A Robot’s Odyssey To Find Himself.

In 1939, something was pulled up from the ocean depths off the coast of Spain; what it was and where it originated from were a mystery to the fishermen who found it, but all the surviving members of that crew agree on one thing~ whatever it was, it saved their lives. Robot 13 tells the odyssey of the hero who awoke from the ocean floor that day as it looks for answers to who he really is …

Robot 13 is a quarterly series written by Thomas Hall with art by Daniel Bradford. Beginning June 2009.

Review: If you’re looking for a fresh new indy series, Robot 13 just might deliver exactly what you need. Writer Thomas Hall weaves the story of a wandering, lost robot whose quest for freedom begins on the sea, and Daniel Bradford brings the story to life with an artistic flair reminiscent of Hellboy’s heavy-inked style and moody colors. Not to mention the first issue features sea monsters galore.

When a ship’s captain and his crew snag a mysterious robot with a floating skull for a head in their net, they also attract the attention of one hungry, nasty monster from the watery depths beneath. The robot sparks to life and saves the captain—and what’s left of his crew—from the behemoth’s wrath, claiming its eyeball as a trophy. The robot remembers drifting out onto the ocean, but now he asks the captain to take him ashore. Will he endeavor to find the enigmatic “Doctor” who seems to know more about the robot than he does, or will he embark on a different path?

Either way, Robot 13 #1 isn’t packed to the brim with content, but the team behind the work does produce an intriguing and visually appealing start to the adventure. The paneling displays neatly and with a creative edge, and the characters—particularly the robot—are well-defined. I’m eager to discover where Hall takes the robot next! Robot 13 is set to debut at the MoCCA Festival in NYC on June 7th and 8th, and the comic will be available beginning the week of Tuesday, June 9th.
