The Pilot Season match-up comes to a powerful conclusion with The Core.
Pilot Season: The Core #1
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Kenneth Rocafort
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Design: Chaz Riggs
Editor: Rob Levin
Cover: Jonathan Hickman
Summary: “The Core is the center of the known universe where ancient and well-established species have created powerful empires, federations and cooperatives. The Core is also the most dangerous place in existence, and younger races are not welcomed warmly. When the first human is appointed to an extraterrestrial Special Forces unit, the soldier must first earn the respect of his peers as he fights for the recognition of his species.
The writing of critically acclaimed scribe Jonathan Hickman (Nightly News, Pax Romana) and the distinct stylings of Madame Mirage artist Kenneth Rocafort combine for this unique Pilot Season book!”
Another solid comic from the Pilot Season lineup. I admit, I’ve been a harsh critic on some (Twilight Guardian, Genius), but lately they’ve just kept bumping up the quality with each new release.
I’m a sucker for sci-fi, but I think if you pick up this book you can agree with me that this title has a strong potential to grow and that it’s interesting. It’s a little overwhelming with all the names, but it’s good.
The art is simply fantastic, with a lot of earthy tones. This issue doesn’t hold back on packing in the dialogue, action, or story, so it’s definitely worth your money ($3.99 because it’s a pilot issue). Another awesome thing about this comic is the ending: it sets up a lot and really builds the depth of the plot and characters. Jonathan Hickman has something really great with this comic; I hope he gets the chance to explore it.
The Core VS Urban Myths

Honestly, I’d love to see either of these comics get a spot. The overall competition at this point is tough—we’ve seen every Pilot Season comic for ’08. It’s almost time to vote: Which would you choose? The contenders are: Twilight Guardian, Lady Pendragon, Genius, Alibi, Urban Myths, and now The Core. Six comics, two spots.
