Comic Book Review: The Darkness #5

The Darkness #5 Header

Wow, this comic is leaving my head spinning! The first four issues of Volume 3 of The Darkness have been awesome; the fifth is definitely no exception.

The Darkness #5 CoverSummary: After having lost control of his Darkness powers, Jackie is wracked with guilt, but a near-death experience may prove his true mettle once and for all. Meanwhile, the pregnant Elle may be suffering from complications due to the fact she is carrying a Darkbaby!

Writer Phil Hester (Green Arrow) and rising star Michael Broussard (Unholy Union) continue their re-defining run on The Darkness with this shocking issue!

Review:
(WARNING: This issue is extremely graphic! Uh, yeah, I just totally hooked you into reading this review, didn’t I? Uh-huh, thought so. ;) )

If you’ve been missing out on this comic, you need to catch up—whether by picking up the black-and-white trade, The Darkness #1-3: Raw Edition, or simply by picking up the previous issue, or maybe both—because this comic is rocking the comic stands.

By the end of issue #3, Jackie Estacado—current host to the Darkness—found himself in a rather nightmarish situation. No, really. After creating a companion named Elle from scraps of the Darkness itself with the aid of the two-faced Professor Kirchner, Jackie found himself seeing the darkness (ahem) inside of Kirchner when he returned to find the Darklings turned against him, their master.

Now Jackie finds himself in a whole new mindset, with a whole new understanding of the power that flows through him—and EVERYTHING is going to change. (And not even Kirchner asked for this.) Not only is the last panel a huge cliffhanger, but the last third of this issue is a storm of cliffhangers and excitement—and each bolt of lightning leaves you wanting more.

Phil Hester and Michael Broussard make a classic combination, and I can’t wait to see their talent again in the next issue.

Yeah, this comic is SO worth your money. If you haven’t been tuning into this comic, the time to start is now. I highly recommend it.

Yeah, there was a video game, and it was good! My only beef is that Jackie was greesy New York mob-guy instead of super-hot New York mob-guy. Sad.
