Top Cow’s Witchblade #118 arrives in comic book stores tomorrow, June 4. Here’s a quick review of the new issue.
Witchblade #118 (“Advent” Part 3 of 3)
Writer: Ron Marz
Artist: Stjepan Sejic
Letters: Troy Peteri
Design: Chaz Riggs
Editor: Rob Levin
Summary: “More than any other man, Kenneth Irons was the ultimate adversary for Witchblade wielder Sara Pezzini. But even though Irons is dead and buried, his reach may stretch beyond the grave. Sara’s past comes back to haunt both her and Dani, as the creative team of Ron Marz (Green Lantern, Samurai: Heaven and Earth) and Stjepan Sejic (First Born) race toward the climax of their first storyline.”
Okay, I have to confess something. I’ve never really been into Top Cow comics ( ;;dodges flying objects from VirtualGirl;;
), except for a few here and there. In all honesty, I’m a Marvel girl at heart with a side love of DC (hello, huuuge Batman fan right here!). Before I started writing for GEN I was practically totally unfamiliar with anything going on in the world of Top Cow. So I’ve been enjoying the chance—or excuse, in my case—to review some TC comics for free.
Witchblade #118 didn’t blow me out of the water, but it was pretty cool, actually. Which means for you WB fans out there … that’s good news.
I’d definitely recommend this issue. All thirty-two pages are packed with stuff (nice for only $2.99), and even though I’m sure it helps to already know what’s going on with the storyline and characters, I didn’t feel lost at all reading this.
There’s a quick review of the three-part story arc (”Advent”) before the comic begins—which I’m sure any comic fan can agree is always a nice and much-appreciated thing to have at your disposal. And I’ve always considered Witchblade art … weird, but I liked a lot of it in this issue. The story was interesting, too, making for a fun read.
The only part I found hard-to-believe was the way they wrapped it up. It’s pretty much a deus ex machina. I don’t want to give any details away, but it kind of seemed like, “Hm, how can we get rid of this guy? Oh, wait, I know! Let’s just make him fall off a building.” LOL! Everything else was good—just the way the situation was resolved wasn’t very convincing, especially because of how much this particular character was built up throughout the whole comic. But hey, maybe he really was just all bark and no bite. Who knows.
The last page of the comic sets up the next issue, naturally. There’s some extra stuff after the comic, like letters (I always loved those in older comics … they should feature those more often), fan shots/cosplay, and a short interview with writer Ron Marz about Broken Trinity (hey, the art for that looks awesome).
