Review: Everyone loves to see a chick fight. You won’t be disappointed in Round 2 of the Dark Ms. Marvel (Moonstone) vs. Rogue smack down in X-Men Legacy #227. This time there’s even a little tag team thrown in when Trance finally gets a grasp of her powers and joins the fun. Unfortunately the critical blow comes not from one of the mutant ladies but Gambit, who has to wait for Ms. Marvel to stop phasing in order to whip some kinetic cards at her. Poor Ms. Marvel once again has to lick her wounds and hide her defeat from her other Osborn teammates. That’s not to say Ms. Marvel didn’t hold her own for a while. She incapacitates Danger and bludgeons Rogue as her Ares absorption wears off. I’d like to say the fight scene is only lacking in pillows and a fountain of water, but it’s so good it doesn’t need either.

The action makes this a must read issue, but the heart of it lies in the scene where Rogue runs to aid Trance who is experiencing a power overload that she can’t control. Most X-Men know that feeling of wanting the ability to have control but historically, Rogue is the one most associated with it; now that she’s advanced her own mutation so that she no longer has the weaknesses that plagued her, she has put herself in a rather maternal role.

It’s not the greatest writing in comics to be perfectly honest. Mike Carey does okay appealing to a teen audience, and Rogue’s dialog is a good example of this. The “A” for ages 9+ rating seems a bit off by a couple years considering the violence. It gets a bit emo at times, and dramatic scenes are all about finding the silver linings of bad situations. In fact, Cyclops has finally made the turnaround to acting like a leader again, and to prove it he said that if their newest headquarters gets torn down, they would simply move on and rebuild. When you think about the fact that H.A.M.M.E.R., the Dark Avengers and the anti-mutant humans are out to get the X-Men, there is a strong likelihood that the building will be destroyed. And who knows what the hell those Dark X-Men are up to? Cyclops needed to take the reigns and step up, although Rogue’s new attitude is showcasing her as a benevolent matriarch who will easily fit in alongside him. Poor, Gambit—I’m not sure where he’s going to fit into Rogue’s new mission of saving everyone she possibly can.

As far as the art goes, Dustin Weaver and team do a great job, although I find Moonstone a bit too much on the ultra-thin-with-giant-boobs side. And with my all time favorite artist, Terry Dodson, doing the covers, I’m excited to pick up this book every month.

They put this in the 9+ category? Wow. I’d say that’s young for most of the superhero comics out there these days.

Yeah, that sounds kind of odd.
