This issue takes place before Steve Roger’s assassination in Captain America #25.
Right off the bat, issue #601 has a glaring problem. The first page synopsis explains briefly about how Steve Rogers was rejected by the military and found acceptance in the Rebirth program to become the first human test subject of the super soldier program. In current continuity, Isaiah Bradley was the only surviving human test subject when African Americans were used in order to determine if the serum was effective and safe before Rogers was enlisted. This discrepancy and the static lifeless artwork don’t offer much hope. Brubaker fans are rabid, however, and the sentimentalism of Steve’s kindness comes out as a soldier dies in his arms during one of the flashbacks. The writing itself has flashbacks within flashbacks and comes off as sloppy. Marvel is also releasing a black and white version of the book.

Gen Colan artwork? Static? Lifeless? I don’t think so. The man is a comics legend. Obviously, he was better then than he is now, but let’s show the man a little respect, please.

Actually, I think Josef Reinstein took over the program and tried to recreate the effects of the super serum that had turned Rogers into Captain America—and he tested it on African Americans because of Rogers, not the other way around.
Hmm I’m not a huge fan of that art style, and it does look a bit static, but I don’t think it’s a mess. Sometimes artwork isn’t for everyone. As Randy said, the man is talented. But so is Alex Ross, and I personally hate when I have to read a comic with his artwork—it’s gorgeous, but just way too realistic for my comic tastes. It is a comic, after all!

Easy, tiger! Regarding the art, yes, it’s beautiful. To me it looks like individual oil pastel portraits that should be hanging in my great-grandmother’s house, but they don’t have any feeling of action or motion, even when showing the climbing of stairs. I know it isn’t an “action-packed” story at this point, but I felt like it was more story book than comic book. I would never say Colan isn’t talent!
Like, Wita said about Alex Ross, he’s famous but not for everyone. I worship Ross but my husband doesn’t like any of Ross’ female characters.
