Comics: Extreme Cake Decorating

We’re geeks who like all things extreme so that includes cake decorating.

Today on the Food Network, they’ve had a marathon of their biggest cake sculpting challenge ever. It’s called Last Cake Standing is actually an entire series of challenges where contestants are eliminated after each themed cake competition. Why am I mentioning this to the readers of GEN? Because a very interesting judge of the third round caught my attention. It was none other than Marvel Comics Executive Editor, Tom Brevoort! He blogged about his experience at Marvel.com.

I’ll focus on this third round because it does incorporate one of my passions, comic books. The four remaining competitors had to work in pairs rather than in their own kitchens with the aid of their assistants. They came into the kitchens believing they were each going to make Extreme Super Hero Cakes of their own design with the assistants they trusted. Instead, they lost their assistants, paired up and had to find a way to fuse the idea of the pair into one cohesive themed cake.

The funniest moment was when Tom Brevoort examined Team 2’s work in progress and told them the way they had designed the spandex & cape super suit made their Global Avenger look like he was in a G-string; he told them the hero needed briefs and have laughing in hysterics for quite a while, they were able to make the change.

This episode originally aired on April 19, 2009 and reran in a marathon of all the entire Last Cake Standing on April 26, 2009. You can check the FoodNetwork.com to see when it will air again so you don’t miss it!
