With everything from comic books, to animated series, to live-action TV-shows, chances are, if you’re a fan of Japan, you’ve heard of Cutie Honey. A magical girl AND an android? Doesn’t get much better than that.
I was able to wrangle a fan and cosplayer of Cutie Honey, Heza-Chan, for an interview about her amazing costume that’s been featured on more than a few sites across the web!
Q: What did you enjoy most about this costume?
I enjoy how every piece fits together to create the whole overall look. It’s so
super-heroish with the vinyl and bright yellow gloves. It makes me want to go out and fight some crime!
Q: Is it hard to wear a costume like this? How easy or difficult is it to put on, wear, and take off?
It’s pretty easy to put on, but I don’t have much range of motion due to the backpiece. It is attached to the pants and the shirt using powerful magnets as to not damage the material. If I bend over too far, the back piece will detach and it can be a pain in the butt to get it back in place. Also, the gloves are difficult to put on at times. I made them so skin tight that putting them back on after taking them off when your hands are sweaty is a difficult task
Q: How much did your costume cost to make, and how much time did you spend making it?
It cost $70 total. The boots and the yellow vinyl are the 2 most expensive parts of this cosplay. If I didn’t already have most of the materials lying around from previous projects, this costume would have been way more expensive. I’d say I had spent around 30 to 40 hours working on this costume.
Q: May I ask what you do when you’re not cosplaying?
Currently I’m on a local Green Bay TV show called “The Ned the Dead Show”. I play a character called Vicki Vixen and we make fun of old hoaky horror flicks.
Q: What kind of reception do you get when you wear this costume? Do many people recognize Cutie Honey?
I noticed a lot of younger anime fans didn’t recognize who I was but they seemed to enjoy the cosplay anyways. A lot of older fans seemed to recognize who I was cosplaying from and was happy to see that version of her being cosplayed. Most people where pretty positive about it, while I guess some others thought it was a bit too revealing for their tastes.
Q: Your wig looks rather spiked and styled; how do you mange to transport and store it, along with the rest of your costume?
I don’t have any special wig box or anything, so I just had it shoved on a wig head and propped it up in the back seat of the car as we drove to the convention. The rest of the costume I just folded neatly and stored it with the other costumes in a duffle bag. I usually always bring styling tools just in case a wig loses a bit of its style during transportation. This time I actually forgot to bring hairspray, but I got lucky and it retained its shape throughout the convention.
Q: Have you ever entered this costume in a cosplay competition at a con?
I did enter it in the hallway cosplay contest just for fun since a friend had suggested it, but I wasn’t planning on it.
Q: Any future plans for this costume?
I may bring it to another con in the future, but I have no idea when or where that will be.
Q: Lastly, any advice you can give to aspiring cosplayers out there?
Cosplay for fun, and always choose a character that you like from a series you like. Don’t give up if things seem hard, there are always tons of tutorials online for sewing and wig styling. Also, it’s never a bad idea to ask someone for help!
