Another day, another evil boyfriend.
Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 2: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Publisher: Oni Press
Creator: Bryan Lee O’Malley
Summary: Does Scott and Ramona’s burgeoning relationship have a future? Isn’t Scott still supposedly dating Knives Chau? Who is Ramona’s second evil ex-boyfriend, and why is he in Toronto? Who are The Clash At Demonhead, and what kind of bizarre art-punky music do they play? Who’s their hot girl keyboardist, and what is Scott’s relation to her? Why are they Knives Chau’s new favourite band? Fights! Drama! Secrets revealed! The answers to all these questions and more!
Review: If dealing with Ramona Flowers’ evil ex-boyfriends wasn’t enough, Scott Pilgrim’s plate just went from heaping to about to overflow. Lucas Lee, professional skateboarder turned movie star, shows up for the obligatory showdown to win Ramona’s heart, but he’s not the only threat in town. Scott must confront old flames of his own, as well.
Knives Chau, the high schooler Scott dated before Ramona walked into his life (and dreams), refuses to let go of her self-proclaimed love for him. Determined to shove the new girl out of the picture, she gives herself a makeover and challenges Ramona to a fight for Scott’s affection. Meanwhile, a new face from Scott’s past shows up and sends him reeling—and even worse, she brings along Todd, evil ex-boyfriend number two.
Scott Pilgrim Vol. 2 dives right into the story, picking up the pace from the original installment. The plot becomes more interesting and engaging, merging humor with video game and RPG homages. Plus, I’m loving O’Malley’s insertion of tips like how to make the perfect vegan meal, which seems totally random but perfectly fits the tone of the comic and its wonderful, quirky crew. On that note, the real shining moments of the book fall with its characters, who earn more depth and personality or introduce (and in some cases, re-introduce) themselves into Scott’s evolving world. The revelations about Kim Pine—the drummer for Pilgrim’s and his friends’ Sex Bob-Omb band—and her past with Scott as well as her own life now serve as some of the most impressive aspects of the book. Creative and heartfelt insights like these send Scott Pilgrim flying into a whole new realm of awesome.

BLoM’s art style was really improving at this point, the characters were way further developed and a lot of mysteries regarding future volumes start here (Is Simon Lee Gideon Graves?) and the whole River City Ransom tribute is amazing.

I think 2 was the book that got me hooked, though I completely fell in love by volume 4
