Day 4: Scott Pilgrim Vol. 4

Scott luh-luh-loves Ramona.

Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together
Publisher: Oni Press
Creator: Bryan Lee O’Malley

Summary: A couple months have passed since we last caught up with Scott, but what could change in a few months? Well, not much has. He’s still living with Wallace and playing in a band. Most importantly, he’s still dating the lovely Ramona and dealing with the gaggle of superpowered, superstylish, superevil ex-boyfriends determined to take him down. But something *is* different. Don’t look now, but Scott might actually be getting it together, just in time to confront Ramona’s most intimidating ex yet!

Review: Scott Pilgrim’s life might finally be coming together in a neat bow. He and his girlfriend, Ramona, adore each other, and he even finds himself compelled enough to go job hunting. The lease is almost up on the apartment, which means Scott has a prime chance at moving in with Ramona and really making things work. Plus, his band has just started recording—a big step on the way to stardom.

Of course, things can’t be that easy, or we wouldn’t have a book four—which, by the way, starts off with several full color pages that are an absolute treat (especially for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog). Someone from his high school past shows up and causes some jealousy between her and Ramona over Scott. When Scott isn’t getting the short end of the stick, he’s being attacked by ninjas with very sharp, pointy sticks. The truth about Ramona’s latest evil ex shocks Scott to his core, but the real challenge lies with finding the courage to fight a battle he’s not sure he can even win.

Scott Pilgrim Vol. 4 slashes its way like a samurai from page to page, serving up humor and even more classic video game homages like a pro. Touching on topics from homosexuality to heartache, O’Malley knows the inner workings of the heart and demonstrates it with ninja-like ease. The way he tangles Scott’s and the other characters’ lives and then sorts them out again wonderfully illustrates the unexpected twists and turns life takes us on, and how quickly things can go from great to awful to fantastic in one swift stroke.

Volume 4 is definitely my favorite, at least so far. A happy ending, and a full color intro as an added bonus. It’s the simple things that satisfy me most.

Yeah, the colored intro to Vol 4 was amazing. It’s nice to see all the characters in full color, even for just the first part of the book. And truly, I like the black and white style O’Malley uses. I think it fits extremely well with the atmosphere and style the book takes on.

And it’s funny that a few colored pages can make so many people so very happy.

The full color extra was amazing and I loved the Sonic logo. I was glad that Scott matured a little bit Roxy and Lisa Miller were welcome additions to the cast and i’m bummed she won’t be in the movie. The happy ending was very sweet and the L word joke was hilarious.
