Say it with me, people…HOLY…CRAP.
Big, big, BIG news today in the RPG world! Straight from the Microsoft E3 2008 press conference, Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIII WILL, in fact, be released simultaneously on the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles! I did NOT see this one coming!
I literally want to stand up, run outside and scream as loud as I can! Seriously though…one of the first questions that popped into my mind was “Why now?”. There is a Square Enix press conference going on right now as I type this so I’m sure there will be more information released as time passes. I’ll be following it as much as I can and hopefully keeping everyone updated as to what is going on!
Update: For those of you who are unaware, the folks at Square Enix plan on making Final Fantasy XIII into a series of sorts. The series, simply titled Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII (HAH!), will consist of three totally different games: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. While they all take place in the same general universe, they will have different characters, stories and plots all together. Here’s what I find interesting: while Agito XIII is a mobile-only game, there is still the issue of Versus XIII. So far it’s still a PS3 only title, but will that eventually cross over to the “Dark Side” (a Sony fan called it that! Not me!) as the main FF XIII title has? It’s anyone’s guess at this point. Since there really isn’t too much known about Versus XIII right now, I presume we will have to wait and find out. You can bet I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good measure though!

I may be the lone one here, but I am still glad I got rid of my 360. I will stick with the PS3 version on this one.

Perzephone: I was actually REALLY thinking about dishing out the money for a PS3 because of this game as well. I remember being so heart-broken when I heard it was PS3 Exclusive…and now yay
OS: I was also wondering what people at Sony thought about this. Apparently in the Square Enix press conference, the producers had said that the version in Japan will be PS3 only. The 360 is only for North America and Europe. I’d like to find out if this is true or not. If that is the case, than I don’t think Sony will have *too* much to worry about…..in Japan anyway

Still, I am wondering, from what I heard, Moe, it is PS3 exclusive in Japan… but what is on my mind is this… What of FF Versus XIII? Is that also going to be for the 360, or will that remain only on the PS3. FFXIII is only one part of a grander idea… Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII. I know the Agito part may not be released in the U.S. as it is a mobile phone game, what of Versus? Was there any news on that at the press conference? Considering it is being developed to work with SIXAXIS, will there be a version comparable to that if it is indeed ported over to the 360 as well?

Well, I don’t mean to stoke a console war, but I am the opposite of the comment above. I don’t want an X360 because it means investing in another console which has only a few exclusive games I’m interested in, the majority of which get released on Windows later anyway.
That said, I’m not sad about this news at all. In the past I was always mildly annoyed with Square’s “put your eggs into one basket, then watch that basket” approach to development. Looks like that’s coming to an end…

I own both consoles (as well as a couple nintendo systems…) so for me it’s all goooood! I’m just super stoked about the game *hehe*!!
I claim no loyalty to any console… if the games are good, I’m in.

I think the point of the big announcement is that it totally screws Sony over. Putting FF as an exclusive on PS3 would force people to buy a PS3 (as we’ve obviously proved with the above comments). Putting it out on both consoles is a huge slap in the face to Sony, who was probably planning on getting some sales on the PS3 solely because of FF.
I’d have to assume that people with both consoles will likely pick up the copy for X360 so they can get achievement points, although, the graphics will probably be better on the PS3.

Actually, someone brought up a good point in another forum. Does it mean that we are going to have to wait longer for this game to come out in the US because they are only making an Xbox version for the US and not Japan and we are going to have to wait that extra time for them to do so? (I think I worded that correctly). Is it going to postpone it’s over all release since they did want a simultaneous release?
