Welcome to Part 1 of 3 of Geek Gods. Just as you may have guessed, I’m going to be putting some of our favorite geek culture characters into the spots of the big Greek Mythology gods & goddesses. Be sure to check out the bottom of the post on how you can get involved!

Apollo is the god of sun/light, archery and music. Link’s bow and his trusty ocarina make him my favorite choice for Apollo. Additionally, the sun, or lack there of rather, plays an important roll in Link’s quest in the Twilight Princess installment.

Marcus Fenix from Gears of War is my pick for Area, god of war, blood and murder. Anyone who carries around a gun with a chainsaw attached to it spells blood in murder in my book. In addition to the Lancer gun, he has war experience, and of course there isn’t a shortage of blood anywhere.

Sephiroth is actually who brought this whole idea of Geek Gods on for me, or at least he was the first thing I thought of when I was reading the gods list. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see this guy heading up the Underworld. Actually Sephiroth would probably make a better Hades than Hades himself, since he never really lived up to the whole being evil and grim thing.

Desmond Miles (Altaïr ibn La-Ahad) from Assassins Creed fits the bill for Hermes, god of travel, flying and theft. His Arabic persona means “The Flying One” in English (or so Wikipedia says). I suppose the whole being an assassin thing might not be quite up Hermes alley, but the rest of it fits pretty closely.
Honorable Mention: Batman

For Poseidon, God of the Sea, and also connected to earthquakes, I chose Big Daddy from Bioshock. These big guys live under the sea, and you know one is close when the ground starts shaking (well, your controller starts vibrating anyways).
And now it’s YOUR TURN!! With the elections coming up, I thought we could all share your thoughts on who would make the best Zeus, King of the Gods! So, send your nominations to me at mandy@girlsentertainmentnetwork.com (don’t comment below on the Zeus thing, keep it a secret!) Tell me who, and why you think should be the Zeus of the Geek World! On November 4th I will put up the top submissions for voting. And just to make things a little more fun… I will personally send a prize to the first person who suggests the winning character! Okay, now get nominating! (one nomination per person please)

I think I would make a better Hades.
I will say that if Hades had to be compared, that isn’t too bad of a comparison.

What no Godesses? or is that part of the Pantheon taken by the GEN Girls?
I would have chosen Nightmare from the SC series for Hades instead of girly-boy sephie.

There’s 3 parts EB! The goddesses will come up later (actually, these were just the ones I got finished first). Nightmare would have been a good one too, I didn’t think of him at all!
And yeah VG.. I’m not doing any that are already called a god!
