Review: Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues in the second volume of the Dark Horse Season Eight storyline, “No Future for You,” and now the bulk of the spotlight falls on Faith as Giles leaves Buffy in the dark on a special assignment. The Slayer Faith, who sprang into action when Buffy “died” in the first season of the television series, developed an infamous reputation when she rebelled from her duties and went on a murderous, psychotic spree under the wing of the demonic ex-Sunnydale mayor. Now Giles pays the fiery young woman a visit, seeking her expertise for a dirty, low-profile job: taking out the misguided Slayer, the heiress and mystically protected Lady Genevieve Savidge.

Infiltrating Gigi’s inner circle proves an interesting task for Faith, but she and the birthday girl unexpectedly connect and soon form a budding friendship. While most of the trade focuses on Faith’s assassination mission, Dawn’s recent enchantment of giant porportions and the mystery behind the figure Twilight weaves into the story, as well. Things only become more complicated when Buffy—hurt over Giles’s decision to exclude her from the assignment—enters the equation. By the end, the dark spell-caster, Roden, pulling Gigi’s strings meets a gruesome fate, and Giles and Faith agree on a unconventional partnership of sorts.

Brian K. Vaughan displays an amazing capacity and understanding of character. The dialogue and depth he puts into the comic ranks as top-notch, and Georges Jeanty’s artwork brings the magic to life. BVS Season 8 Volume 2: No Future for You also includes the issue, “Anywhere But Here”—scripted by creator Joss Whedon and illustrated by Cliff Richards. Centering on WIllow and Buffy and revealing a shocking insight behind super-sized Dawn, the issue shines as a return to classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer—while “No Future for You” leads the way into the future of Slayers.

The Giles & Faith part were the best part of the series for a long time. I know it seems odd to say that so many of my favorite moments are sans Buffy but they are. I was totally addicted to Willow & Oz then Willow & Tara. I did get annoyed with Faith a lot on the show (perhaps it was the acting) but in this comic, I really liked the storyline.

    Agreed! :D

My favorite character on the show has always been—back when I would randomly watch it and then when I actually sat down to catch up with the whole series—no one other than Spike. <3

Willow has a lot of great moments—they all do. I love that the show is technically about Buffy, but because Whedon has such an impressive grasp of character, the focus is never really just on her.

This was a particularly good arc. I can’t wait for more Giles and Faith!
