Kannaya: Hawaii: The Other Japan

A trip to Honolulu, Hawaii was my present for graduating from college from my parents. Who doesn’t want to visit Hawaii?! The islands of Hawaii are located almost halfway between California and Japan. I was pleasantly surprised to find that much of the population in Hawaii were Japanese and I decided to share what I have been up to for the past week.

When my family visits somewhere, they like to see much of the culture. We went exploring around the island of Oahu to find Japanese and Hawaiian culture alike. Now, I was surprised. I mean really surprised. Almost everyone on the island could speak Japanese, English, and Hawaiian. Almost every sign had kanji, and there were amazing Japanese cuisine eateries everywhere.

Japan has always been a country I have wanted to travel to, but it is really expensive (even more so now with the American dollar lowering in value) and it is a long way to fly. I’m sure many of you out there have also wanted to travel there and couldn’t find the right funds. I recommend Hawaii;

not only for amazing beaches, surfing, and whale watching, but for the Japanese culture you will be surrounded with. No, it isn’t Tokyo. It is more like Osaka, where the people are more traditional in their Japanese culture.

If you do ever find yourself in Oahu, there are a couple places you need to go. First is the store Toys and Joys in Honolulu. This is a huge anime and videogame specialty shop. They had a mind blowing selection of anime figures, old collectible videogames, and weaponry. I purchased the figure Jo from Burst Angel at a good price. You can visit them at http://www.toysnjoys.com/welcome.html.

The other awesome shop we found was called Jelly’s. They had everything: comics, records, CD’s, anime, manga, and books. It was so big and full of awesome items that I probably didn’t get through half of it. I did buy a hentai called Cosplay Café. It looks hilariously sexy. They don’t have an official website, but they can be found here: Harbor Center Shopping Plaza
98-023 Hekaha St. Suite B1-9
Aiea, Hawaii 96701

For your viewing pleasure, a picture of myself surfing and falling.

    Ma, what I wouldn’t give to Hawaii for a week.

    I have to admit, I wish I had the funds to go back to both Japan and Hawaii. Last time I was in Japan was when I was working for Disney and we “worker exchanged” for a month. It was a great month in my life. I got to go to a place that I had wanted to see forever. But because I was working most of the time, I didn’t get to see as much of it as I would have liked to.

    And with Hawaii, I haven’t been there since I was a teenager. We used to visit family there and stay at their place, but I don’t know what happened. We just stopped going one year.

    Seeing your article on Hawaii just made me want to go back, but so that my wife and children could experience it as well.

    By the way, that is such a graceful looking fall. Almost as though you planned to fall that way. ~_^

    rjac- I think your family would love Hawaii and Japan. I know you will be able to take them there someday.

    Moe-Sorry about the $50 and no trip. You’ll get yours someday. And I haven’t found a Hentai I didn’t like yet. I perfer it over regular porn for plot and sexiness. ;)

    Scarlett- You’re a cute dork too ;)

    Gemini- Yes, you should get over your fear of swimming before visiting Hawaii. Although, you could just explore the awesome terrain they have on the land instead and drink Mai Tai’s all day. Not too shabby.

    I’ve been to Oahu twice and noticed this as well. A lot of signs and stuff include a translation in Japanese. I guess it’s kinda like their tropical getway.
