This morning I called into a very early conference call with MTV, Harmonix, and Apple Corp. The purpose of the call was to reveal the details of the relationship to what we guessed yesterday would be Beatles songs for Rock Band. Turns out that isn’t exactly the case.
MTV announced that this is an exclusive partnership for a brand new video game that will feature songs by the Beatles. In the game you will be playing through the entire Beatles catalogue. Which brings on more questions. Is this a Rock Band title? No. While Harmonix is working on the title, it will be a game in it’s own right and not have the Rock Band tagline to the title. Will there be additional peripherals? They aren’t going into details about the game, but this will be a “new experience” brought to the musical game genre.
The project is moving forward with the blessing of the Beatles and Yoko Ono. “It’s cool. I love it and hope it will keep inspiring and encouraging the young generation for many decades,” said Yoko Ono Lennon. While Sir Paul McCartney had this to say, “The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the
music from the inside out.”
Don’t expect this title to be out any time soon. The projected time is Holiday 2009. The Harmonix team is still working on many game elements which is why there are such few details about the actual game play. We did get a great side tidbit that Apple Corp is still working on digital distribution deals to make the Beatles catalogue available for digital download.

There’s a great article on CNN about this right now as well.
On a side note, I’m still waiting for Piano Hero to come out.. anyone?

I think you might be alone there Mandy. Also, why was early press conference so early? Lol. The game sounds like it will be a good addition. I did not think the Beatles would settle for licensing out their music for a few DLC songs…this is more of a proper tribute.

The conference call was probably “very early” because she’s on the west coast
I doubt it was so early for everyone.
And I’m serious! There are a lot of good songs that could use a keyboard. MIDI-hero maybe?
