Pheonix Rants: It Is Pink, Get Over It.

I Personally think ‘girl gaming’ sites who get offended by the colour pink don’t have a right to complain if they post Hello Kitty articles and have cute pink mascots.

If you are a female gamer and own a site or write for a site that could be described as ‘gender nutural’ or ‘masculin’, I could understand if you were slightly offended by the press release of all pink accessories. You are right, it isn’t your obvious audience.

However, if your site is obviously aimed at women, by women and you review girly products, such as Hello Kitty games, pink iPods and nail decorating machines. I fail to see how you can be offended by PR companies sending you information on pink products? You claim you are ‘not the obvious market’ when I’d argue that you obviously are, maybe it verges on hypocritical.

I also fail to see why you are even offended. Pink is a colour, it sells well and that is a fact. We could hardly keep the pink DSlite on the shelves at Christmas time. Now, I own a pink DS, Pink iphone case and pink Skull Candies. This does not make me ‘less’ of anything. I just like the colour, I don’t find it degrading in any way. If I don’t like pink (even if I am female), I will quite simply not buy it. It is merely an option for those who do want it. You know, blue is a very nice colour too and I’ve even heard that they will sell you something in pink even if you have a penis!

Nobody is forcing you to buy all pink accessories because of your vagina. I write for a girl gamer orientated website and I am past the point of caring. I play games and what colour Xbox360 pad I use will not effect how badly I suck at Halo3, but I can still play.

Good points all around Pheonix! I totally agree, it doesn’t make any sense to gender something like a colour, or anything for that matter. It just makes me laugh at stupid things like that, such as “oooh such-and-such an alcoholic drink is a girlie/boy drink”….it’s a fucking drink that goes into your stomach. It doesn’t have feelings or a gendered identity!

My GF isn’t a fan of pink stuff so I don’t go out of my way to get pink things.

I think you can be a fan of a color and support products that come in that color, no problems. I think colors attached to gender identity are kinda silly anyway, but by personal preference I understand if someone wouldn’t want to be associated with a color. I wouldn’t buy pink stuff not out of gender identity, but because I’m not a fan of pink.

Question tho… Who is that fugly turquoise DS for anyway? Ice Blue? Yecch.

    :)

    Definitely.

My thing with the argument is that even if your site wasn’t specific to a particular sex or a man’s man style site- a PR person may very well as send information on pink products to as many places as they can.

Their job is to help provide exposure for their clients.
In cases that the site was geared towards, they would get great promotion out of it. In the case that they wouldn’t, for a masculine site- they could run it as a humorous promotion but it would help bring exposure.
I seem it odd someone would take offense to someone trying to do their job.

I am not the biggest fan of pink. Personally, I like purple a lot more…. but I do buy the pink xbox 360 controller, and the pink DS, and I even have a pink frying pan…. Why? Because my husband doesnt like to use them. Thus a 90% less chance of my things getting broken, lost, or dirty. Maybe it’s lame that I resort to that, but I don’t care. My pink 360 controller is the ONLY one that doesnt have button problems. Am I 100% sure the reason is because my husband doesnt use it? No. But I am pretty sure it has a lot to do with it. =)

Pink is just one of those colors that happen to be associated with femininity. As are most pastel colors, and solid/dark colors are associated with masculinity. Personally, I think pink looks good on the ladies, and I like the fact that they like it too. Probably only because society told me that’s the way it should be. Who am I to tell society that they’re wrong?

“I’ve even heard that they will sell you something in pink even if you have a penis!”

    LOL, I heart you, Hollie.

I like pink, but I wish they would make stuff in even more colors.. I will buy pink, but if they made stuff in green, I’d buy that instead.

  8. KittyPurps Says:

yes… they have blue and pink, but where are all the purple products?
