Actually, my FIRST adventure in cosplaying! That’s right, this past weekend I attended my first convention, Anime Detour 2008 in Bloomington, MN, and did my first cosplay with Kannaya and VirtualGirl at my side. We dressed up as Mario (Virtualgirl), Wario (Kannaya), and Luigi (myself), and our friend Nick accompanied us as “Prince Peach.”

I think it paid off. The major downside of the event is that we were denied entry into the costume contest because we did not know we needed to pre-register. I could say a few things about the marketing and promotions for Anime Detour 2008, but my mom always said, “If you can’t say anything nice…” and, well, I think you all know the rest.
As far as being my first convention, I guess I wasn’t disappointed since I didn’t really go in with any expectations. I found LOTS of fun stuff I wanted to buy, but limited myself to a cute Sonic the Hedgehog keychain and a Legend of Zelda: Four Swords t-shirt. One of my biggest disappointments was the lack of swag. Oh, how I’ve been regaled by VirtualGirl with tales abundant free stuff from the many conventions she’s been to. Sadly, there was none of that there. None.
I have to admit, my favorite part was everyone stopping us to take our pictures. We got asked even before we made it inside the convention! Overall, our costumes were a big hit! Nothing beats Mario drag! We finished off the day with a trip to Mall of America, and talk about a fantastic sociology experiment. The amount of stares, double takes, laughing and pointing…we all thought it was hysterical!
I guess in the end, I’m not sure cosplaying is for me; it’s too big of an investment, moneywise. Honestly, I already have far too many ‘hobbies’ that I can’t really afford! But I gave it a shot, and I’m glad I did. And of course, we’ll plan on sweeping the Twin Cities costume contests come Halloween 2008!

Those outfits are awesome! I’ll be participating in my first cosplay experience coming up this summer at GenCon Indy.. I haven’t quite decided what to do yet… (I’m thinking Tifa, but nothing in the works yet)
I love dressing up, so I know I’ll love it, but yeah.. the money part of the hobby sucks!

Ah. Those costumes are so cool and cute. Too bad you were denied entry … something some conventions need a better control over is letting people know about preregistration … but I say you all had wonderful costumes.
