You know when you play a game, and your first thought is “wow did they make this game just for me?”
As an avid reader of crime fiction, you can only imagine my excitement about a DS game that presented itself as a visual novel. Although the majority of gameplay is spend reading, investigation and making logical inferences are the devices which advance the story.
Almost immediately, Phoenix’s mentor, Mia, is murdered, and her little sister, Maya, becomes his sidekick. As a spirit medium in training, Maya is able to channel Mia at certain times throughout the game, as well as assist Phoenix in determining if a witness is being less than honest. These paranormal elements add a bit of kick to the already suspense-filled plot.
The game is essentially a book, and is probably not for everyone. If you’re looking for a ton of action and button mashing — it won’t happen here. You will, however, become emotionally invested in the trials and see how one person can be intertwined in so many lives. Albeit a bit embarrassing to admit, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is the only video game that has caused me to shed tears to date (not including tears of frustration).
