Retro Review: Professor Layton and the Curious Villiage

There comes a time in every gamer’s life where they make the decision to buy a game solely based on the cover.  I got lucky.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village was a spontaneous “oh this looks cute!” purchase for me.  I hadn’t previously heard or read about the game, which is a rare thing for me to do now-a-days.  I believe an outer force was speaking to me that day in Circuit City; Professor Layton easily shot to the top of my favorites lists almost as soon as I turned on my DS.  It was fate in the form of cuteness.

Even just writing up this review now, the dainty theme song enters my head.  Teamed up with short cartoon clips and a string of elusive characters, Professor Layton does all things right.  If you are one that lets an E rating and cartoon graphics push you away… don’t.  This game is not easy.  A series of logic puzzles and thought-provoking scenarios are what fuels the story.  As you work through the tricky puzzles, a mystery unfolds gradually, always making you want to play more.

As a warning, this is one of those games that seem to defy the space-time continuum.  What feels like only minutes has turned into hours, and before you know it you are caught in a complex conundrum, and have to press on.  The puzzles and story provide hours of enjoyable gameplay.

Highlights:
-Optional side quests and puzzles
-Sequel comes out in August
-Music will get stuck in your head
-Downloadable puzzles available

Adorable, yes, but this game made me want to throw my DS on the floor several times. Some of those puzzles are ridiculously hard.

My sister recently bought a DS (damn her!) and has this game now. I must say, it’s pretty fun, but I have to agree with Jill a bit, too.

Lol … Circuit City is a channel to a higher power. *giggles*
