So coming way out of left field today, is the death of the Championship Gaming Series (CGS). This is a tragedy to everyone involved in this league, who called themselves the only true professional gaming league, and to fans alike. Here’s their goodbye letter posted on their site, that shocked faithful fans and players who found out at the same time that the CGS was over:
I chatted a bit with Cardell “Dave Cheppelle” Thomas from team 3D NY, who says that he got a call from his manager only 30 seconds before he saw the goodbye letter on the site.
Chicka: So what are you going to do next?
Cardell: Go home (Savannah, GA) and work, work, work. Try to get a nice car and apartment, and after a year maybe finish school.
Chicka: Are you still going to practice, or are you going to take a break after this big hit?
Cardell: Nah, I’m still playing.
Chicka: Great! DoA4 or SC4?
Cardell: I already know DoA4, so SC4 for now.
Of course Cardell, along with the many other players of the CGS are forever grateful to the league, even after the abrupt ending. Many of them are going to continue practicing to compete in other leagues and tournaments, and some are finishing school and moving on to “real jobs”.
The CGS left a huge mark in Esports history. They took a huge risk by trying to make an unpopular sport become popular by using mainstream mediums, and in the two years that it survived, I think it achieved it’s goal. There are many fans of Professional Gaming now than ever before, and more recognition of gamers as athletes. Who would have thought that millions of fans would be watching teams mash away on their controllers and keyboards on TV in the US? The Championship Gaming Series definitely deserve many thanks from all of us gamers for taking a huge risk for us! Thank you, thank you, thank you CGS, and hopefully this isn’t the last we see of you!

Wow I’m shocked. I actually enjoyed watching them on tv. Hopefully since it’s been proven as possible, someone else will want to start up a new championship league.

did not see this coming at all. I was going to try out next year too.

Yeah, the people and organizations that pave the way for new ideas usually don’t thrive, as they are before their time. But, as they said, future organizations will learn from them and hopefully prosper. Sad news!

Wow, this certainly sucks. I thought they would be doing well enough to survive. I guessed wrong.
