One of my favorite artists of all time is Camilla d’Errico. I walked her to a signing and on the way we giggled, awed at costumes and talked about her work.
Girls Entertainment Network: Please tell us a little about yourself and what you do?
Camilla d’Errico: I am an artist and I do comic books and graphic novels. I am also a painter, so I get to work in two different avenues for my art. I’m here promoting my comics and graphic novels which I am very excited about.
GEN: Which is a great novel by the way.
CDE: Thanks! I am such an fan of Japanese manga and the way they use aesthetics to tell a story. I think it makes for a strong character base.
*Pause for beholding the Cylon costumes*
GEN: So obviously you are deeply influenced by manga. What is your favorite manga right now?
CDE: My favorite manga that has been completed is Clover by CLAMP. I love CLAMP. It is just so good. I like a lot of manga that hasn’t been released yet so I read it online or I try to order it form Japan. Another one I love is Hatsukoi Limited, it is so good. I was also following Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles but it got so complicated. Actually one of my favorites is Naruto. The manga is so intense and nothing like the anime.
*Camilla and I discuss the finer points of Japanese subs versus American dubs.*
GEN: You recently came out with a Plushie.
CDE: Yes, I came out with a plush version of the devil Kuro from my graphic novel Tanpopo. He is adorable!
He has the cutest little bum for a plushie. I have never seen a plush with a booty so I was happy how that turned out. Sometimes when you design something and someone else builds it, it can create some unexpected awesomeness. He is my first plushie and I am a big plush fan.
GEN: Do you have any vinyl figures coming out?
CDE: Oooo, I have one in production. It is actually a figure of Tanpopo. We choose one of the most complicated poses of Tanpopo. She is sitting and she has all the machinery behind her. I have see all the production photos and it is so detailed. I had to draw all the tiny pieces of the machine which was a bit painful, but it looks amazing.
GEN: Do you have any idea when it will be out?
CDE: It was actually suppose to be out for comic con, but when they are done well they always push back the deadline.
GEN: That will keep the collectors on our toes for sure. I see you had shirts, ties and underwear. What other products do you want to branch out to?
CDE: I want to do accessories and I want to do glow-in-the-dark swim suits for night swimming.
GEN: DO IT! You get your people and I’ll get my people and we will make this happen. But really, I want you to know how amazing your paintings are.
CDE: Ah, thank you! I feel my paintings don’t fit into just one category. People who don’t really like manga or anime see my stuff and see it as fine art. On the other hand people who do enjoy the manga style appreciate the different take on it. I like that most people can find a way to relate to my art and find something they like about it.
GEN: I think it has something to do with the animals you have interacting with the figures as well. Who doesn’t like animals?
CDE: I should tell people that. If they don’t like my paintings they don’t like animals. What kind of a person are you?!
GEN: Haha, well I just want to thank you for talking with me. It was awesome!
CDE: You’re welcome and thank you.
Isn’t she such a sweetie! She was a blast to talk to and I can’t wait for her new releases. Make sure you check her website. Camilla updates it frequently and while you are there check out her shop. Thanks again Camilla! I hope our wrist is better. ![]()

She seems nice, but more importantly her art is unique and cool. What comics of hers do you recommend? They better NOT be in black and white!
