This was the first comic con that I’ve been to in years, despite having lived in San Diego for nearly 5 years. I knew that it had gotten bigger and that the format had slowly changed but I didn’t know just how much. The 2009 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award Nominees have just been announced. They’re given out each year at Comic-Con International to highlight the best and brightest in the industry. This year will be the 21st annual ceremony named for famed writer and artist Will Eisner. Dark Horse Comics have been honored with 13 nominations, DC came in second with 10 and Marvel a close third with 9. IDW has grabbed 5 nominations thanks in part to Joe Hill’s Locke & Key. The GEN girls who attended SDCC this year got the chance to meet a very unique photographer. His name: Jericho; his super power: the ability to take 3-D photographs… from a camera HE created!! Not only is he a “SUPERRRR GENIUSSS” (insert Wile E Coyote voice there)… but he’s super sweet!

At Comic Con I was amazed at how many kids were there, not only that, but how many little girls recognized me as Supergirl and wanted their pictures with me. There were even little Supergirls there too and it was adorable! Once me and Jinxie were in a hurry to get somewhere so we were running down the convention hall in full costume trying to get to where we were going, we were stopped for photo ops and I felt a little tug on my cape. I turned around and there was this sweet little girl about 5 or 6 smiling up at me, and her out of breath dad says,”She just chased you down the hall wanting to get her picture with you!”. Wow. I felt so special!! It made me miss my little sisters back home.

They work until the wee hours of the night sewing, pinning, molding and dying. Spending hundreds and thousands on a costume for that one special convention. So why, then, do some cosplayers shun photos taken at cons? Come join the conversation!

That’s right, a gathering of geeks, a congregation of cosplayers and herds of “Hug Me!” signholders. While conventions, which vary from anime to Star Trek, go on throughout the year, spring/summer is usually considered con season as most of the big name conventions are held when most people are able off school and work and are able to attend.
