X360 Review: Wanted: Weapons of Fate

Wanted

Movie games are likely to suck, no matter what the property attached to it is. Case in point: the Watchmen game was downright horrible, as well as a host of other movie-to-game translations that have come down the pipeline over the years. Wanted: Weapons of Fate is considered to be an adaptation of the movie (remember it? Angelina Jolie?), though it doesn’t follow the storyline laid out within. Instead, you follow Wesley on his next assignment as a fledgling assassin through a game heavily inspired by Gears of War that doesn’t completely fail, and is quite acceptable - for a movie game.

Do you like to Watch?

Voyeur: one obtaining sexual gratification from observing unsuspecting individuals who are partly undressed, naked, or engaged in sexual acts; broadly: one who habitually seeks sexual stimulation by visual means. If you aren’t one already, you will be by the time you walk out of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen

Don’t remake me Bastian!

Occasionally Hollywood comes up with some good ideas on their own. Occasionally. Mostly they just adapt books and recycle movies people already made. Now, while that can make for some intriguing material, usually it just blows up in their face. Beware, what follows may astound you. I won’t assume in what way…

The Hollywood Reporter says, Warner Bros. is in the early stages of remaking The NeverEnding Story. That noise you just heard? That was my childhood being flushed down the toilet.

“The Kennedy/Marshall Co. (”The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) and Leonard DiCaprio’s shingle Appian Way are in discussions with Warners about reviving the 25-year-old franchise with a modern spin,” said THR. No word on who would direct the new take but original producer Dieter Geissler is already on board.

It seems Warner Bros. is making a grab for every fantasy story they can get their hands on now that the Harry Potter films are almost done. THR says the remake will, “examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first pic.”

You hear about these things all the time but I’m REALLY worried about this one. I have such fond memories of the original and I don’t want them tarnished. That being said, I won’t be able to stop myself from going to see the remake. What about you? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

In other, more pleasant news, Warner is going to be making a Suicide Squad movie but there’s bad news of another remake of sorts. Clue. You can read all about those in my latest edition of Nerdy News.

Who watches the Watchmen?

WE WILL WATCH THE WATCHMEN!!

A settlement has been reached between Warner Bros. and Fox and the film will be released on March 6th as planned according to Variety. The studios had this to say in a joint statement:

“Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture ‘Watchmen‘ in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros. acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography.

Fox acknowledges that Warner Brothers acted in good faith in defending against those claims. Warner Bros. and Fox, like all ‘Watchmen‘ fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film’s March 6 release in theatres.”

Confidential is all relevant though as Variety claims Fox with receive a gross sum equaling between 5% and 8.5% depending on how much the film brings in worldwide. In addition, they will be a “gross player” in any sequels (wouldn’t that be something?) or spinoffs. Fox’s name will not be on the film nor will it co-own the property.

Looking for some sort of compensation, WB is likely to set their sites on producer Larry Gordon for starting this whole mess. In court, Fox claimed it retained the rights to Watchmen by way of their 1994 agreement with Gordon. Variety said, “[The Judge] found in his ruling that Gordon, who’s not a defendant in the case, had never exercised his option to acquire Fox’s remaining interest in ‘Watchmen‘ nor had he honored his agreement since 2005 to offer the project to Fox under the ‘changed elements’ part of the pact.”

I, for one, am very relieved. Besides the fact that I was running out of clever pictures to go along with my reports, they were cutting it pretty close with the release date. For a while there I thought there might be a chance we’d never get to see Watchmen at all. So, do you feel bad for any of the parties involved? Besides the fans who had to nervously await the outcome of course.
