Growing up, Halloween was the only time of year where you could get away with the silliest/scariest or stupidest costume you could think of! People would shine their creativity and wear it on their sleeve as a badge of honor every October 31st.
Looking back, I can remember almost every one of my Halloween costumes growing up. From Rainbow Brite to Strawberry Shortcake; a frightening witch to a handmade original alien. It always felt as though Halloween was created for the creative.
Today, Halloween has become a much different environment. While you still see the creativity, much of it revolves around sexiness and current hot button topics.
So, where does our pop culture fit into the equation? With the shift in what’s “hot for Halloween” we are seeing an influx in costumes that cater to our generation! From sexy versions of Rainbow Brite to full on iPod costumes, we are taking Halloween away from the kids and making our own festivities.
Below is a gallery of some of this years hottest Halloween “pop culture” outfits. Which one is your favorite? What are your thoughts on Halloween becoming “Sexified”?

I found one, but it’s not for humans. It’s for a pet.

It’s interesting how sexy Halloween has become. I’m studying in Japan right now, and Halloween is considered an “adult” holiday here, as far as I can tell. No trick or treating or any of that. I’ve heard/read that it is more aimed at adults than kids. So I guess it’s a new phenomina in America, but not necessarily everywhere.

Yea, I agree.
Even before recently I never considered dressing up for Halloween cosplaying until someone pointed out to me how it was the case.
But, you dress what you think is well for the occasion.
I’ve dressed up as Hitman (No. 47), a US Secret Service Agent, Darth Vader, and a vampire before in the past…

I heard Sexy Hermione was outlawed in 35 different countries.
By the way Becky, this is the best post. On the internet. Ever.

^^ Is it really?
Funny, because that’s MY COSTUME!

As much as I love gals dressed up in scandalous costumes, I don’t care for the current “slutty Halloween” trend. I like dit better when Halloween was just people dressing up in the coolest/most fun/most intereting costumes they could come up with. It was more about fun and less about trying to impress.
That’s just me though.

I think of the costumes listed here I do like the Star Trek costume.
I have to ask “Where is Emma Frost” because that is one of my favorites, too. Along with “AIX”
I do agree that Halloween has become extremely “Sexified” and it is what it is. But, I do think that as long as we are dealing with adult women. If that is the type of costumes they want to wear I am okay with it either way. Some of these costumes do not have to be as sexy as we are portraying them here. Halloween can still be fun without being so “Sexified”
The most important thing to me is that adult women wear costumes that they feel comfortable wearing. Sexy or otherwise.
Thanks for such a wonderful new post!
Happy Halloween Everyone!

Love these.

Actually, they’re making these sexy costumes for teenagers too. Being as small as I am, I often shop in the Juniors department, and they basically had the same outfits, just not as many. But they were just as scandalous as those pictured above. Can you imagine letting your 14 year old daughter out in one of those get-ups? It’s not so much the adults I would worry about, but the ones pretending to be!

Well, look at Miley Cyrus and Bratz dolls. I mean, that’s what culture is feeding them anyway.

Well, I love Halloween for sure, but as a Druid I’m torn whenever it arrives. It IS a Druidic holiday that was “borrowed” (read as: stolen from prior to killing the Druids) by the Christians as a means to convert pagans into their “newfangled” religion.
As a Druid, I love that the Druidic holidays are so prevalent in Christian practices, even though most people don’t know it (many elements of Christmas, including the date, are Druidic, as are elements of Easter, May Day, and several other holidays!) Halloween is actually known as “Samhain” (pronounced Sow-win).
The basic notions are still intact, actually, though now it’s ALL about the costumes and candy. It used to be about honouring the ancestors who’ve passed before, and warding off evil spirits during the time of the year (the end of the Druidic calendar) that the dead could most easily “cross into” the land of the living. Thus the costumes were to hide or scare the undead, and the food/candy/fun was to honor the deceased and pray for a good harvest the next season.
I have a NaNoWriMo kick-off party scheduled for Friday, but it’s been dubbed a Halloween costume party and I can’t decide about going… do I go and not wear a costume? Or do I throw on my Druid robes and kind of trivialize my spirituality by downplaying the fact it is one of my 8 major holidays?
Too bad they don’t make “sexy Druid” costumes. =P (Of course, I don’t think it’d work for me even if I could get my hands on one. =D)
As an aside, I know it’s an unpopular stance, but I am not against “sexy” teenage costumes. I feel we currently teach our teens that sexuality is a “bad” thing, and make them ashamed of their bodies too much. I don’t equate a 14-year-old wearing a sexy Halloween costume to her automatically going out and having sex with every boy around her. I think once you’re around that age, you should be encouraged to start expressing and/or exploring your sexuality so that as you age you grow up with healthy attitudes on sex as opposed to more prudish notions.
Of course, that’s my opinion only, and I know it’s a minority one.
Maybe I should grab that sexy Princess costume! Hmmm…
/head explodes from frightening image in mind

These models are hot. The costumes are pretty good too.
We’ve got a few suggestions as well…

Ahh such cute costumes!
October 27th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
As they say: boobs = power. I’ve been seeing those type of costumes around for the past decade or so. Don’t the Wiimote costumes, they’re quite popular as well.

Yeah…the whole trend has me a bit crabby at times. Not that I have ANYTHING against cleavage…I have been known to rock it every once in a while. However, Kannaya and I are getting ready to go and compete in some costume contests this Halloween…and are being repeatedly told not to even attempt to enter because drunken “Sexy Referee” or “Sexy Postal Worker” will win. It happens too. Last year I saw the BEST Queen of the Damned costume (hand-made) beaten out by a completely trashed “Sexy Nurse” who was falling out of her top. We are wearing our Mario Girls costumes and feel the need to sex them up in order to have a chance at winning. Sad!

Hum I remember there always being a few “sexy” Halloween costumes, they were just harder to find. I mean, I remember stumbling across a french maid outfit in the mid 80s in the costumes dept at Eatons while I was hunting up costumes and apparently they’ve been around for years and years (I even stumbled on a cache of old costumes dating back to like 73 at a local Woolworths) So it’s not really a new thing, just that it’s played up more now than it used to be?
That ghostbuster’s outfit looks like it’d be perfect in the new movie
I’m impressed by the detailing a lot of these got
Quite a collection
