Whats in a Gamer Name?

This is the beginning of a weekly feature that will be starting here on GEN! Called ‘Whats in a Nam…Gamer Name!’ It will feature someone new every week, interviewing them on their personal Gamer Name and why they chose it. This week we’re featuring one of our very own GEN girls, and one of our newest ones at that! CHICKAMUNGUS!!

What is your name and what does it mean?
CHICKAMUNGUS and it didn’t really mean anything when I chose it, but lots of guys say “There’s a chick among us!” when I join a game lobby, so I just started to say that’s what it meant.
-How long have you gone by this name?

Almost 4 years, since Halo 2 released
-From your name, do you think it affects how people view you online? What are some of your experiences with this?

Yes, for the people who can actually read my name, they think it’s pretty cool and unique, and they LOVE to say it over and over. It has a ring to it, and it’s pretty funky =) It’s kinda a conversation starter and it breaks the ice in the game lobby, which really helps when you’re a girl. For those kinda rare occasions, some immature guys say “Your name is CHICKAMUNGUS? So does that mean you’re a really humongous chick?” And for those guys I usually just agree with them that I’m 500 lbs so that they can shut up.
-How did you end up choosing your name? Was there anything the personal inspired you in coming up with your name?

My name actually is very personal to me, in a very nerdy romantic way! My husband’s nick name is Mungus (don’t ask me why), and when he was thinking of a gamertag to choose after we bought Halo 2, we came up with the name Willamungus (his real name is William). When I was brainstorming on my gt, I had this really mushy moment and was like “Oh baby, wouldn’t it be sweet if we got matching gamertags!?” and we both came up with the name CHICKAMUNGUS (because Tunemungus just doesn’t sound cool, lol). We were engaged at the time and it was like a virtual way of having a Mr and Mrs gamertag, lol! And it’s always in CAPS, I don’t know why, but I like it that way….maybe because it dominates game lobbies, hehehe!

-Do you have experiences with people calling you by your gamer name in real life? How often? My friends IRL call me by my gt sometimes, mainly because of the Mungus nickname that my hubby has. People who I’ve met online, but then talk to over the phone call me Chicky/Chick a lot, but it doesn’t bother me at all since I do call some of my friends by their gamertags in person, I don’t know why, but it’s just so much cooler than calling them by their real names to me ^-^

-Do you seem to always use this name when starting a new game? Or new character?

I use this name everytime I start a new account on the Internet. It just stands out, and I’m so used to using it, I can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone else with it yet, so I guess that makes it a keeper!

Thanks Tunesha for letting me interview you on your Gamer Tag!

Stay tuned next week for another GEN Girl and Someone extra special ;) Just wait to see!

Hearing gamertag stories is always interesting. I often get quizzed on my TF2 nick a lot. (not this name, but another name)

its seems some people get their names in complete randomness while others really think about how to represent themselves amongst the gaming community. That’s what makes everyone’s name so unique.

That’s much cooler than a lot of the gamer tags I see online. I can’t believe some people pick stuff like “rcag1300″ or something totally unpronounceable like “vtnnqnrrg”. It’s like, Really? Out of all the possibilities, that’s what you picked?

I HATE it when people use numbers out of laziness. If you want a number because of meaning, great… but if you just assume “everything’s taken” so you tack on 11418 at the end of every name it’s SO lame.

There’s an infinite amount of non-number names out there… if you just try to think a bit!

I love Chickamungus’s name, even though I never use the term “chick” when describing women (must be the 2 terms of honours womens studies in college I took brainwashed me. =P)

Not bad. I never thought your tag meant “chick among us” I congratulate you on having an original.
