Who do you believe in?

There are three candidates for District Attorney in Gotham this year, and by the time The Dark Knight rolls around in July one of them will have snagged the fancy title and paycheck: Harvey Dent, Roger Garcetti, and Dana Worthington. But just who are these candidates and what plans do they have for Gotham?

1. Harvey Dent (left)

Dent is currently assistant DA and he’s claiming that he has “the courage, the guts, and the steel to stand up to the violent mob gangs that are destroying Gotham.” If elected for the full position of District Attorney, he’s vowing to crack down on police corruption and organized crime (aka the mob). Even though The Gotham Times have recently reported Dent as being second in the polls to Garcetti by a competitive 5%, people all over the country have been rallying with stalker-like enthusiasm for the Dentinator. But maybe that’s just because those supporters, immune to the natural continuum of time, know that he eventually becomes one of their favorite Gotham baddies: Two-Face. Although in the comics, before he got a face-full of acid—courtesy of the crime boss Sal Maroni—and went a little crazy over the loss of his charmingly good looks (how vain), Dent was one of Batman’s closest friends and allies.

Wow, they really could care less about the well-being of Gotham.

Some are against Dent, however, like the Concerned Citizens for a Better Gotham, who are accusing the candidate of being media-crazed, prosecution-happy, and dishonest. Well, he did take a third-grader’s hard-earned “fortune” of $18.51 perhaps a little too eagerly, so they might have a point there.

2. Roger Garcetti (middle)

After DA Finch kicked the bucket in Batman Begins, Roger Garcetti took over as acting District Attorney. Predictably, Garetti’s campaign website is bashing Dent, his biggest competition in the race; while Dent is endeavoring to scope out dirty money ties between police and the mob, Garcetti seems to whole-heartedly support Gotham’s “brave men in blue.” His slogan is “Trust Garcetti,” which is not very creative in my opinion. And where does he stand regarding our favorite Caped Crusader? You’d think, taking his age and political experience into account, that he’d embrace a more conservative view and resist the change that Gotham has been undergoing—the relentless crime wave, some vigilante dressed like a bat jumping from rooftops and taking stylish black vehicles like the Tumbler (and the Batpod, yay!) to the streets, crazy lunatics with knife fetishes robbing banks …

All I know is that Dent is (at least in the comics) a major supporter of the Dark Knight—which earns my vote. The Bat Man gets things done.

3. Dana Worthington (right)

You’d think a candidate with a name like Worthington would be a good fit for a political position, and that her heartwarming story of coming from a hard-working family that’s had its fair share of challenges might kindle hope and optimism in the hearts of the people of Gotham. She even expressed honesty and sickeningly sweet concern when somebody left an expensive-looking blue sweater at her campaign office. But the citizens of Gotham aren’t impressed. She’s only captured 17% of votes so far and is seriously lagging behind Dent and Garcetti, who she says are “locked in a mudfight” (eww, gross imagery). She claims that their “old politics” of dirty tricks and accusations are what’s plaguing Gotham (Really? I thought it was a surge of crime and the corruption of mob bosses that was causing the prominent division between the rich minority and the overwhelming poverty and despair in Gotham city—my bad). Worthington promises to bring her “new politics” of simply working to make Gotham safe to the table.

Well, hey. If you think your mom would make a good District Attorney, vote for Dana Worthington. Maybe she’ll knit you a nice, blue wool sweater at Christmas if you become an active, model citizen.

At any rate, I Believe In Harvey Dent. Do you?

Thanks! It just kind of hit me that while I’ve been scoping out TDK viral information all this time for my own blog, I never actually tried to figure out the candidates’ political stances in comparison to one another. It was kind of fun; I found the sweater thing hilarious when I saw it on Worthington’s site. :D

Oh my god, she so does! That’s hilarious!
