Con Coverage: Superhero Weekend featuring Wonder Woman Day 2009
Comic Fusion, Flemington, NJ

Comic Fusion hosted another successful Superhero Weekend fundraiser for the local family crisis organization, SAFE in Hunterdon. The two-day event celebrated superheroes focusing on Wonder Woman in the grand tradition of Wonder Woman Day started by Andy Mangels of Portland, Oregon in 2006. The celebration launched at noon on October 24, 2009, and despite the initial dreary weather, customers and volunteers considered Day 1 a success followed by the official Wonder Woman Day on Sunday which was gloriously sunny and warm. Comic Fusion and crew raised an estimated $5,000 for SAFE in Hunterdon!

Highlighting this year were two special appearances: Mr. Joe Sinnott, who continues his illustration career at the age of 83, started back in the 1960s with Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and John Buscema working on top Marvel titles like the Fantastic Four. Mr. Pete Marston stopped by again to update his family’s personal collection of Wonder Woman items, which has accumulated since his father William Moulton Marston created the Amazon Princess in 1941. Mr. Marston’s daughter has been helming the website wonderwomannetwork.com.

Mr. Sinnott began taking commissions from the moment he arrived and worked steadily throughout the day. He also had the most sought after piece in the auction, a black and white inked illustration of Namor the Sub-Mariner. Once fans got a close look at that, it was easily the most requested character of the day from his list.

The weekend’s auction for comic book artwork featured an extremely diverse collection of Wonder Woman which showed her with every body type and of various ages; plus Comic Fusion featured several special pieces up for auction of other favorite characters. The raffle drawings included some rare HeroClix, a signed Jack Kirby print, plenty of retailer variants and statues among many other fantastic items donated by companies like Diamond Alliance and independent artists.

The weekend included some other special guests, including X-Men’s Rogue, the Fantastic Four’s Susan Storm, and Justice League members the Flash, Lady Flash, and of course, Wonder Woman—all of whom graciously posed for pictures with fans and signed autographs. Both days featured fantastic artists who volunteered their time, travel and talents to the cause: Chris Muller, Ken Haeser, and Rob Kramer.
