X360 Review: Resident Evil 5

Imagine this: You’re running through some ancient ruins pulling levers and collecting treasure; must be Tomb Raider, right? You’re ducking in and out of cover while engaging in a firefight with armed militia in a factory complex while your co-op buddy flanks the enemy’s rear; must be Army of Two, right? You’re stuck on the back of a moving Humvee racing through a wide-open savanna mowing down wave after wave of incoming motorcyclists with a mounted machine gun; sounds like Time Crisis, or perhaps Virtua Cop, right? None of these situations are likely to conjure images of a survival horror game, but as the title of this review probably tipped you off, they will now.

Although extremely successfully both critically and commercially, Resident Evil 4 was a major departure for the franchise in many ways. It effectively moved the game into what I bitterly refer to as “action horror” territory. Survival horror has always been defined as an underpowered character overcoming hopeless situations, but by the middle of RE4 Leon is a walking one-man-army, shooting down everything that moves without a single scare to be had throughout the game’s lengthy campaign. Fans of the original Resident Evils like myself who felt a slight sting with the new direction of the series taken during Leon S. Kennedy’s latest outing will be further saddened to know that any traces of the classic atmosphere are now completely nonexistent. Make no mistake, Resident Evil 5 wants to be many things; Army of Two, Gears of War, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid…but what it doesn’t want to be, is Resident Evil.

Story
It’s been several years since Jill and Chris took the spotlight in a proper Resident Evil game. Claire, Leon, and Ada have received all the glory recently thanks to Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Degeneration. Resident Evil 5 brings the storyline into modern day, with Chris Redfield and his new Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) partner, Sheva Alomar, hunting down an eccentric arms dealer in Africa. Early on Chris comes across a data file holding a picture of Jill, who he believed to have died during the events of the The Umbrella Chronicles. Despite facing insurmountable odds, Chris vows to discover the true fate of his old partner, and Sheva promises to be at his side every step of the way.

Hint: Not Sherry.

It seems strange that the developers would choose to continue the story of a relatively obscure Wii exclusive in a major sequel. How many Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners have even played The Umbrella Chronicles, let alone finished it to completion? That being said, for what could very well be the climax of the entire legendary franchise, Resident Evil 5’s story is woefully deficient. There are so many characters and loose ends still unfulfilled that longtime RE devotees will be left with a major pair of fanboy blue balls. It had been rumored that the game would catch players up on the past ten years in the universe’s expansive canon through flashbacks (perhaps even interactive ones), which would provided a much more well-rounded, satisfactory conclusion. Instead, only snippets of the same, singular cutscene from the end of The Umbrella Chronicles are used to tie this game into any of the others. If not for the long-awaited final showdown between Wesker and Chris and the origins of the Progenitor Virus being unveiled, this could have just as easily been a spin-off game; it’s that inconsequential.

Gameplay
Indicative of its more arcade-like approach to the franchise, Resident Evil 5 is broken up into just under a dozen and a half episodes, spread across six chapters. A few can be completed in less than ten minutes with little effort, while the others will range from 20-40 minutes on your first attempt, although most of this comes from searching every nook and cranny for worthwhile pickups.  My first playthrough was timed at 7:24:07, but consecutive playthroughs can be cut down substantially since you’ll have upgraded weaponry and won’t need to scour every single area for items and gold. In fact, the world record according to the current online leaderboards stands at two hours.

The chapter layout implements several features which make survival practically a given for all but the most incompetent gamers. A checkpoint system allows you to quickly jump back into the action after being eaten by a crocodile (it’ll happen, trust me), and you can replay any chapter once you’ve beaten it on any difficulty, allowing you to grind for treasure and items to make later levels even easier. The co-op system allows two players to trade certain items, meaning your God-like friend can pass down all their extra first aid sprays and magnum bullets to your newb character. It’s a bit reminiscent of Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, if you’re familiar with the possibilities there. A very simple trick has already been discovered which grants hundreds of thousands of in-game dollars in mere minutes, turning an already easy game into an absolute cakewalk.

I made sure to play through the game the first time alone, as I knew once my friend got in with me he would start running towards the goal line without allowing me to take in the sights and sounds. Likewiswe, if you’re just starting and your co-op partner has already unlocked and leveled up all the best weapons, even on the hardest difficulty the game will pose little to no challenge whatsoever. Enemies hit harder, but they’ll never really get close enough when you’re mowing them down with the Gatling gun and one-shotting bosses with a 5000 damage handcannon. To unlock professional difficulty you must first beat the game on Veteran, but this also grants you a rocket launcher with infinite rockets and no reload time. Combined with the bargain price of first aid sprays and you can be basically invincible as early as your second playthrough.

The re-imagined control scheme and over-the-shoulder perspective from Resident Evil 4 returns, but my biggest complaint about the gameplay is that the characters take up a lot of room on the screen and aim rather slowly, allowing enemies to sneak up on you from behind. Especially when Chris is using the Gatling gun, he will carry a massive backpack full of bullets that covers even more of the screen, often blocking Sheva’s vision as well in tight corridors. The inventory system is also something of a problem during do or die situations, as it no longer pauses the action when being accessed.

In regards to Sheva, her AI is surprisingly competent. She makes for a much more capable female co-star than Ashley ever did, and has a pretty good idea of what items to pick up and what to leave behind. She can be used as a mule for extra ammo or healing items, and will even give them to you on her own if the situation calls for it. The commands you can use on her are limited to offensive or defensive roles, but she doesn’t ever really become a nuisance. Still, a human player is ideal for maximum efficiency, as her pathfinding, response time, and regard for her own personal well-being are not always perfect.

Those who have played the demo will know that Chris can occasionally help Sheva reach certain platforms by giving her a boost. Not only are the animations for these moves some of the coolest in the game, but they help vary each character’s objective and experience a little. It’s a curiously underused mechanic throughout the game, but it’s a nice change of pace for the very brief moments where it is included.

Beating the game unlocks the ability to play as Sheva.

Like Leon and Ada in Resident Evil 4, Chris and Sheva can stun humanoid enemies by shooting them in the knees, arms, or head, then close in and do a melee attack. These attacks vary depending on the character and the place where the enemy was shot, and Chris and Sheva can even bounce an enemy back and forth between each other up to three times. If you’re attempting to get the Achievement associated with this combo however, you’re more likely to pull it off on one of the giant axe-wielding mini-bosses in Mercenaries than a regular Mijini.

The quick-time events also return, but are used much more sparingly than in Resident Evil 4. This can be kind of confusing as most of the cinematics are non-interactive, then suddenly the B button will flash on screen and Sheva will get impaled because you were looking up the egg trick on GameFAQs instead of paying attention. Still, there’s no giant statues of Salazar to outrun, so that’s a nice return to reality (I wonder how many people even remember that sequence when looking back at Resident Evil 4 through their rose-tinted glasses).

I must say that as a long-time fan of the series, the changes made to this latest installment are hard to accept at first. Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and the father of the survival horror genre, has publicly stated he did not approve of the direction his former underlings were taking the series, and I have to agree. Mikami’s Resident Evils have always proudly worn their many Western inspirations on their sleeve, while still retaining a distinctly Japanese essence. Resident Evil 5 is a game developed by a Japanese studio trying desperately to emulate every major Western game in the past couple years: Army of Two, Gears of War, Tomb Raider…there is almost no trace of classic Resident Evil here other than a few familiar faces.

For instance, one chapter is an entirely on-rails shooting stage where you must gun down countless waves of motorcycle-riding Mijini with a turret from the back of a Humvee. The level then ends with a boss encounter seemingly straight off the cutting room floor of The Umbrella Chronicles. Another chapter has you riding down a swamp on the front of a boat while playing target practice with stationary enemies waiting for you to blow them up with the ridiculous amount of explosive tanks and barrels scattered liberally around each platform, ledge, and pier. Later you’ll enter the “Ancient Ruins” and solve a series of rudimentary puzzles and perform formulaic lever-pulling while gathering precious gems and fighting off infected tribesmen who can wield sunlight to shoot laser beams at you. The most noticeable digression however occurs in the last two chapters, when Chris and Sheva can suddenly take cover behind almost every object, just as the Mijini drop their broken bottles, tiki torches, and pitchforks and inexplicably start wielding assault rifles and rocket launchers.

BSAA policy is don't ask, don't tell.

BSAA policy is don't ask, don't tell.

Despite the game’s erratic identity crisis, there are some truly thrilling moments in Resident Evil 5. The boss battles in particular, of which there are many, equal pure video game wizardry. Sure, some of them have been done before, but the execution here and the overall package of immaculate sights and sounds adds up to a much better experience than that seen in other games. Except for the final battle of course, which is so far over the top it hits China and keeps on going.

Visuals
Aside from some poorly-synched lip animations, there’s very little to complain about visually in Resident Evil 5. The game is an undeniable beauty to behold, which may be why the developers chose to make the majority of the game take place in broad daylight, a peculiar move for a supposed survival horror game. There’s not a single fright in the entire game because of it, but it doesn’t attempt to usurp Dead Space as the current horror champion. Instead Resident Evil 5 is all about being a visceral, interactive action movie with the occasional gruesome creature thrown in for effect.

In addition to the game’s beautiful set pieces, the enemy and character designs are absolutely spectacular, some of the best in recent memory. The art team really should be commended on the Hollywood-level quality they’ve provided here. The Mijini are basically the Los Ganados from Resident Evil 4, except with a more noticeable tan, but it’s the creatures, bosses, and main characters that truly shine. Wesker has completed his transition to full-blown Matrix character, even sporting a new bullet-dodging move. Yet as badass as he is, it’s Jill who has received the biggest makeover. Now sporting blonde hair (no, I don’t know why either), she could easily give Metal Gear Solid 4’s version of Raiden a run for his money; strange, considering she is the girl best known for fighting zombies in a blue tube top and leather miniskirt, but it works within the confines of the story and makes for some truly exciting cinematics.

The once clean-cut Chris Redfield looks suitably macho from a distance, but during cutscenes I couldn’t help but be reminded of this mongoloid kid my family use to babysit; it’s mostly the giant Dumbo ears though. Sheva on the other hand is an extremely welcome addition to the Resident Evil universe, and I have to say that she is by far the sexiest, most able-bodied, non-stereotypical character of African descent ever seen in a video game. It might have something to do with the accent, but her shiny clubbin’ outfit and tribal bikini will undoubtedly be permanently etched into every female cosplayer’s handbook for all time.

DLC
Capcom has announced a multiplayer versus mode to be released as premium content in the coming months. Given the game’s total abandonment of survival horror in favor of co-op-based run-and-gunning (figuratively, not literally), this is a fitting move. While the solid gameplay will work nicely with the new modes, it’s the dream team face-offs and match-ups that I’m truly excited about. Imagine Jill and Sheva versus Chris and Leon, or Wesker and Ada versus Tofu and Rebecca. Nothing is official as of yet, but if this is in fact the last Resident Evil before a reboot, it’d be nice to cram as much nostalgia in as possible before breaking the hearts of fans everywhere. Given Capcom’s reputation for mass quantities of digital content, I’m also hoping for some additional costumes, new multiplayer characters (namely, Hunk), and classic Resident Evil locations as new Mercenaries maps, but that’s just plain greedy on my behalf.

Next-gen Jill looks good, but where's Hunk?

Next-gen Jill looks good, but where's Hunk?

Lifespan

Resident Evil 5 has a lot going for it, and even more on the way with the versus mode DLC. On top of multiple difficulties and New Game+, you will no doubt have an entire friend list full of buddies wanting help with a certain level or Achievement. By completing chapters on higher difficulties and getting higher ranks based on your performance, you are granted Exchange Points which can be used to buy bonus content such as unlimited ammo for specific weapons, new visual filters, and dozens of figurines of every in-game character and enemy. The online leaderboards which track your best times for each chapter are also very addicting, but Mercenaries is where the bulk of the replay value lies.

Recommendation
Resident Evil 5 is an undeniable video game masterpiece, but a terrible Resident Evil game. If Resident Evil 4 was your first RE title, 1) you’re a n00b, and 2) you will probably love this one. If you’ve been a diehard fan of the series since 1996 you will likely be utterly disappointed by the anemic story and total lack of anything resembling what made Resident Evil such a memorable franchise in the first place. If and when that sour taste wears off though, you’ll be left with an exciting, beautiful game with plenty of replay value that’s definitely worth owning, if for no other reason than to enjoy co-op Mercenaries online with two bikini-clad Shevas.

Sometimes I don’t wonder if we have the same parents. Seriously though, you are dead on with this review. Although I did like RE4 more than you, I think the series is now officially off track. The game is defunct of scares as mentioned, and has little to no discernable storyline. There isn’t really a thing in your review (other than a mispelling of the word instalment - installment) that is incorrect. The game is technically flawless, but the gameplay is void of excitement, or even fun. Had it not been for the wonderful production values, I myself would have not finished it or gone for all 1000 GS for it. It’s a game that must be played at least once, but will be forgotten in a month or two.

  2. Drakkenstrike Drakkenstrike Says:

Sorry for the second comment, but Sheva is a cool new character, I actually really like her, and all of her dialogue in this game. Too bad so little effort was spent in explaining any of her backstory. She’s literally dropped right into the game with no explanation as to who she is or why she is even in the game in the first place.

  3. Pew Pew Says:

    1) I’m a n00b, 2) I loved this one ;)

Good review. I felt like it went above and beyond what I had expected from it after the demo. Still, screw those BSAA emblems man… I guess Sheva cosplay will make up for that though?

  4. Switchback Switchback Says:

There’s a very good reason for sequels not having any of the fundamentals of the often superb prequels: It’s 2009. Gaming has changed (sadly), and it’s changed in favour of n00bs who love pixels, new features and a lack of any challenge whatsoever…

I played this at a friends house and even though I’d never played a Resi title before, I knew what to expect. Did I get what I expected? No. I instantly thought: shouldn’t I be playing a survival horror, not some Gears of War style shooter?

While I didn’t play enough to get a grasp of the characters and the story, I agree with the review. Much like Drakkenstrike said:

“There isn’t really a thing in your review (other than a mispelling of the word instalment - installment) that is incorrect.”

    (it’s misspelling =))

You misspelled enjoy near the end, too.

I’m a n00b of the series also. This looks fun to me even tho I know it’s not a real survival horror game. Looking forward to it. Nice review btw.

Nice review! I guess we’ll all see for ourselves sometime this weekend how it’s going to play out. I’m saddened by the fact that it’s not true Resident Evil, but at least it offers all of those cool unlockables. Sheva in a bikini is damn hot.

  8. Drakkenstrike Drakkenstrike Says:

Yes, Sheva in bikini is hot. Agreed.

lots of skin for a RE title.

  10. WITA WITA Says:

Man, a lot of that is really disappointing to hear. RE4 wasn’t my first RE game, but I hope I love this one anyway. It does suck that RE has changed so much—”action horror” is a good way to describe it—but I thought RE4 was a refreshing change for the better. Still … nostalgia.

    I found a new cosplay…Jill!

I am a diehard fan of the first RE games, but can appreciate the new take on the series. Personally, the games needed a little change and RE4 did that well. The stories have always been hit or miss, so I can dig the new graphics and action.

  14. mangina mangina Says:

I liked RE4, never liked the previous ones (tank controls frustrate me) and this game is nothing like 4, it takes a stronger stance on action, but keeps the horrible controls of the 4th. While the 4th had a better interface, it wasn’t meant to be a balls to the wall action game, so you worked with the control scheme, the only artificial means the game had to make you feel trapped, scared. This game is just co-op action, and quite frankly, 50 Cent Blood in the Sand does that better. This is not an action game because of the poor controls, this is not a survival horror game because there is nothing to survive except gun fights, it is a bland, and utterly unplayable mash of the two, with no highlights from either one.

  15. ambrolia ambrolia Says:

Like Jill aka The Nerdy Bird, I too am curious as to the boob thing. Anyway, Billy boy, love the review. I must say this by far is my favorite. I feel that the RE series is taking on a different light. Kind of disappointing like the RE movies. After playing the demo, I will probably wait to purchase this game. The graphics are gorgeous, no doubt about that. And Sheva is pretty hot. Now pick your tongues up off the floor fellas!

All I have to say is blalalalalalala.

I’m like Jill. I’m currently on act 3 - 2 now and would rather just play through and avoid any spoilers. That said, this is my first RE game and so far I’m really enjoying what I’m seeing!

  21. tusense tusense Says:

I never really played the older ones except in passing in random arcades (and how many arcades are even around? That shows you how familiar I am with the older games). So the fact that deviates from past versions won’t really bother me if I get it.

Though I can see why some people are concerned with that. I see that happening with series I grew up with and worship and even though I still keep buying every game they spit out, I keep getting disappointed. Oh well. I guess it’s back to replaying our originals for us old farts.

  22. Pew Pew Says:

One thing I’m also noticing from reviews on blogs all over, is that RE fans seem disappointed while most other people seem to really like this game. I can get that some people miss the survival horror from the series, but RE4 is seen as a videogame masterpiece in the years after it came out. While when it came out, it was mostly just “a great game”?

I don’t really get that. Are people really that disappointed with RE5 being like RE4? While the vast majority of gamers seem to absolutely love RE4? Like, what did people expect? :)

  23. LnlyCmpnCbe88 LnlyCmpnCbe88 Says:

I think the point is that RE4, while a really well-made and enjoyable game, was the beginning of a transition for the series that longtime fans did not like. RE5 is the realization of those fears, as it takes everything RE4 started and pushes it too far.

  24. Mr Achievement Mr Achievement Says:

It is funny how sad you are about RE5 departing from its roots… your conviction that there has been fundamental change is the only reason I am interested now!

  25. sh1tsweak sh1tsweak Says:

I have never played any of the RE games. Your review did nothing to get my interest going on this game. Still, a good and thorough review Mr. Haley.

  26. AlphaNuMega AlphaNuMega Says:

Looks good, always been an RE fan, but I miss the living dead to be honest. I hope they bring them back. Will still pick up a copy.

  27. gomeja gomeja Says:

I still haven’t had a chance to purchase RE5 yet, but after playing the demo, I know that I’m definitely going to enjoy it. Having played RE3 for many hours (many spent running from Nemesis), I’m dying to know what’s happened to Jill since then.

As for the change in the series beginning with RE4, I enjoyed the new control scheme and change in enemies. It was only obvious that if there were to be more evolved and challenging enemies, the control system would have to evolve as well.

I guess my only disappointment is that RE5 is so short.

im severely disappointed by this redone, remake garbage developers are releasing these days.RE4 was bad enough, seeings it took away any scare factor felt previously by RE titles.RE5 seems to continue, further taking what resident evil gave to gamers(fun survival horror at its best) and making just another action zombie game(felt like a 3rd person,2player left 4 dead a Lil didn’t it?)well great review as always, and im hoping they step up the next one(silent hill homecoming was garbage, but at least i got a little scared out at some points.if your going to make a sequel, please, stick to what made it good and work off that.

That’s one of the best reviews of Resident Evil 5 i have read on the net. Props to the author. I gotta agree with him about the series no longer being “Resident Evilish” but things evolve and fortunetly for us, RE5 at least evolved into a very fun co-op game. I had a blast playing co-op and at the end of the day, all that really matters is if you had fun playing the game.

  36. SeeFour SeeFour Says:

What I don’t understand is why Capcom can’t take the series in new directions and release new, bigger, shinier RE games with the classic gameplay. One thing about gamers is that they will bitch if a dev innovates and they will bitch more if they don’t. So why not do both? It would be a good way to tie up loose ends if nothing else.

I saw the review on X-play yesterday and it reassured me of a few things… 1. Adam Sesslar has a way better vocabulary than Morgan Web. 2. Morgan Web is actually a man. 3. They collectively pick apart any and every flaw about any game that they can. However, the one point that hey made that sunk in was when they said that Sheva’s AI was shit. They made it seem as though the game had no value outside of the co-op campaign because of this. So are they noobs or are you just a one man army (I think I know the answer)?

In any case, you as always are far too talented a writer to have not sold out (yet). Good review Willy J.

The fact that its less than $5 doesn’t really bother me, unlike the ridiculous bull they tried to pull with the SFIV costumes. But if it doesn’t add any new characters, it’s going to get really old really fast.

An experience system similar to Call of Duty 4 and customizable loadouts would also greatly increase my interest in hanging on to RE5 that much longer…

Cry some more about how it’s “left its roots,” babies. Ugh. Enjoy it for what it is, rather than complaining about what it’s not, because it’s a game that I’m going to get a lot of replay out of for a good while.

However, I do agree that Sheva can sometimes be a dunce. I played it with a human partner, but I’ve started on the single-player and Sheva

    - Enjoys her pistol a bit too much
    - Walks right into lasers
    - Behaves like a drunken retard.

That’s being gentle on her, too. But I didn’t buy it to play alone. YMMV, I suppose.

I also don’t know how anyone can claim to be a fan of the originals and then comment that the plot or story of RE5 is bad. The whole stupid plot line is bad, the whole story is weak. Maybe you can ignore the horrible dialog from the first game, but everything about these games have been cheesy, cheese cheese. From moving statues around in a police station to find magic gems that unlock a door to the insipid lines they spout out.

These games are fun, but they are hardly anything worthwhile in the plot, character and ideas department. Once they lose the fun and try to be serious is when they suck, I just want to shoot dogs and crap and have fun. Wish they could have at least given us controls like Dead Space.

I am a big RE fan the first three whore legendary the 4th was an instant classic of the series still playing 5 I think that the 6th one should have the greatest iconic character in RE history as the main Charater !!Hunk!! the 4th survivor.
